July 2011 Moms

did you have a midwife or ob

When you were pregnant with LO what did you go with? Were you happy with this choice or would you/did you change it for another pregnancy? Hope that makes sense.

Re: did you have a midwife or ob

  • I saw both at the group practice and was happier with the OB. The midwives were a little flaky, they kept trying to get me to join "group appts" where a bunch of women would go for several hours and all have their monthly appts together. I declined constantly and eventually they just switched me over to the OB since she was not a part of the group visits and for whatever reason all of the midwives were only working with the groups. I can't think of anything I'd rather do less, than go to a prenatal appt. with a group of other pregnant women.

Anyway the OB was amazing, she left the group shortly after I delivered and I'm in the process of trying to find a new one.

  • I would have liked a midwife, but there aren't any in my area, so I went with a Family Doctor. She specializes in obstetrics. Now she is our pedi. It made everything really easy and she was always supportive of me going med-free (though in the end I got a c/s, but it was necessary).

I had a high chance of c-section with my first and a repeat c-section with my second so I chose an OB.  If I didn't feel I could advocate for myself, though, I wouldn't have hesitated to get a doula to do so during the c-section and PP.

  • I started with a Midwife and ended with an OB due to GD.  I loved them both, they were all great and very supportive of my natural birth plan.  My midwife sent Kellan a little romper and congratulations note after he was born, even tho she didn't deliver him.

  • I loved my MW but hated the other one in the office!  She told me that in order for BFing to be successful, I needed to quit my job and stay home.  Whaaaa?  Thanks for the encouragement, lady!

When I went in for my induction, that MW (same practice, different office location, so I'd never met her) was phoning it in.  Not as pleasant.  The MW that delivered LO (shift change 30 minutes into pushing, gah!) was AWESOME and I will go to her next time around.

Even though I ended up being induced, I was glad they let me go as long as they did since there were no complications and I wasn't uncomfortable at all.  It was a great experience, save for that nasty MW.

  • I had an OB. The same with my first.

He's an almost retirement age OB who's seen it all and delivered something like 3K babies which is a lot for this small town and a smaller bigger town hosiptial. I just trust him and his judgement so I didn't have to stress, overanalyze and research every little thing.

Also, do to issues with my first nobody but an OB will see me anyways.

  • I went to an OB who is in a small practice (his practice) with one other doctor. You made all your appointments with either him or the other dr. So there were no surprises. I loved it. Unfortunately, he didn't get to deliver Nick because he was out of town and even if it was in town he wouldnt have made it in time anyway. Nick basically fell out lol.

  • I love my OB. I would have kids just to see her. (Kidding of course, but I really love her.) She is in a practice of 6, but you'd only see one of the others in an emergency. I saw almost all of them the several times I was hospitalized, they were all really nice. But since I had a scheduled c-section, my OB was able to do it herself. If you just went into labor, you'd get whichever of the 6 was on call, another reason my c/s made me so happy!
  • I had an OB and loved her. She was very natural birth friendly and laid back. I saw her 100% of the visits and she delivered DD. I saw the midwife in the practice the day after DD was born and a different OB since mine went on her 5 day off rotation 3 hours after DD was born.

I got all my prenatal care from the MW practice at Mass General. Seemed like the best of both worlds: all the up side of a midwife who is less rushed from appt to apps and into the wholistic care, but also all the up side of a very well respected hospital and availability of the OB/surgery/high risk/NICU care that comes with it.

We moved when I was 8 mos pregnant and I switched to an OB because I couldn't find a MW fast enough, and loved her as well. It was a private practice with only two OBs, so I knew both of them pretty well within one month of weekly visits. They were very supportive of doing as few interventions as possible, and the hospital was very 'baby friendly' (option to room in, delayed baby checkup to allow bonding/nursing, all that stuff) I can't wait to use them again next time.

  • OB but not by choice. Midwives aren't recognized here so to have one I'd have to pay and would have to have a homebirth, they're not allowed in the hospitals. (NB Canada)

I saw a group of midwifes at an out of hospital birth center.  I would love to go back there, but my employer changed insurance companies, and their services are no longer covered.  A home birth would be cheaper next time around (safety is the same for an out of hospital birth center vs home birth) unless my insurance changes.

  • OB and I will next time too.  Preterm labor, was in the hospital a week before DS was born...I had a really rough labor (epidural(s) failed, was not planning on pain relief!!), and DS was 6+ wks early, plus a NICU stay. Next time I am nervous for pre term labor again and I just like the idea of being in a hospital where if I or baby need extra care it will be available.

  • I had an OB. DH picked her out of a large number of OBs that he had worked at while in school. I really liked her and she was very knowledgeable. We moved when I was 8.5 months pregnant and I switched to a new OB that DH had also worked with and had a glowing recommendation from my OB.  My second OBs office was one of the "we want you to see everyone" kind of places so my first appointment was with her and then I rotated quickly through all the others. I ended up going to appointments every 4 days, so it was easy to see all 5 of them. I was very excited because the day I was scheduled to be induced (pre-e) happened to be the day my new OB was on call at the hospital.

Because of complications I ended up with an emergency c/s and want an OB to be my primary doc during future pregnancies.

    Thats too bad!

I had a midwife in a solo practice, they are government funded here and she delivered my baby at the hospital she has privileges at.

I was similar. I has all my prenatal care through an office with both MWs and OBs and planned to deliver with the MWs at South Shore Hospital. I ended up switching to Boston Medical Center at 36 weeks pregnant. I had an OB there that I loved, and I had a great experience all around. However, with #2 I am back to SSH with my new insurance.

  • midwives, loved them. only thing that was a little wierd was the random, which one will show up for delivery, but I didn't really care that much.  I thought they were great, encouraging both a natural birth and really pushing breastfeeding.
