GTKY 1st Year Anniversary

So DH and just celebrated our 1st year anniversary and had a brand new cake made by the baker who made our wedding cake (something offered when we ordered our cake).  So yummy!!!! Lemon cake with lemon fill.

So on your 1 year did you eat unthawed cake, new cake or none at all.  If you had cake what kind was it?

Re: GTKY 1st Year Anniversary

  • We did the same thing! Our baker on our one year made an exact replica of the top tier of our cake and we had that!  They had said not to freeze ours because it wouldn't taste so good.  I am glad we went new! Ours was vanilla cake with raspberry cream on the inside covered in a vanilla buttercream with all different fondant (sp) fall colored leaves.

  • None at all. We were married out in Vegas (not at a quickie chapel, but a normal wedding). The hotel where we had our reception made our cake and we obviously couldn't take any home or have them make anything for our 1 year.

We had the bakery remake the cake for us.  Top tier was carrot cake with strawberries and vanilla buttercream. Bottom tier was chocolate cake with chocolate mousse and chocolate buttercream.

  • We did not.

We didn't save any of our cake, because we moved 1,800 miles away the day after we got back from the honeymoon.

I barely remember our cake, but I think it was several layers of different kinds of cake and frosting From what I remember it was quite good.

My DH completed his last year of school (4 years undergrad, 4 years post grad, 5 years post grad training, 1 year specialty training), so we took a big arse trip to Hawai'i and gorged ourselves on amazing food.

So no cake, but we had an amazing time!

  • we had unthawed cake, and it was really good! My mom and I do cakes so it was one we had done together it was vanilla with buttercream frosting and fondant snowflakes. Like I said it was yummy even a year later.

  • We did the same thing, OP. Our baker made us a replica tier of our original cake. We were both weirded out at the thought of eating year-old cake. Ours was cookies and cream. We did have lemon with lemon as a tier in our wedding cake though, it was so delicious! I would have chosen that for the anniversary, but it's also DH's birthday, so I let him choose :)

  • We ate unthawed cake and it was surprisingly good! It must have been wrapped very well because it didn't taste old. We had a 5 tier cake that consisted of bavarian cream, pecan praline, and chocolate filled layers. Our top tier was pecan praline.

  • We moved (across a few states) before our 1st anniversary. So I froze 2 slices of cake and moved them. MH did not want to eat it but I made him try it and it was still just as good as on our wedding day! We had a white cake with fondant icing and bavarian cream filling.

    Happy anniversary

  • We wrapped and froze our top tier, but we ate it pretty much right after the honeymoon. It was chocolate/vanilla swirl with apricot filling and chocolate ganache icing. How can you just let something like that sit in your freezer for a year and get all freezer burned? Besides, it was taking up valuable freezer space.

On our anniversary, we went to the restaurant that catered the wedding and ordered some of the food we had at the wedding.

  • It's actually a funny story!

DH and I had a destination wedding in Florida. I carried the cake the entire flight home- it was in perfect condition... Until we made it to our hometown and my dad swerved across 3 lanes and my cake totally collapsed. We ate the messed up cake that day-

We had a replica made for our anniversary.

I saved our top layer for our first anniversary, but a month or so beforehand, we got a new fridge and my husband accidentally threw it out when he was cleaning out the old one.  We didn't realize till we went to take it out to defrost it.  I was ridiculously sad, but we went to the grocery store and bought a new cake and pretended it was special. :)

I bought a special ice cream cake instead of eating our old one. The top on our original was too big to keep and I don't think we would have eaten it anyway. It was white with raspberry filling.

  • DH has family that owns a wonderful bakery and they did our cake.  They also made us our anniversary cake new.  We had the same as one of the tiers on our original cake.  Yellow traditional cake with vanilla added, white butter cream frosting and the filling (my favorite) was bavarian cream with chocolate chips and baileys!  Absolutely amazing!

  • We ate our top tier!

We had to cut it up in order to fit it in Tupperware so it didn't have the pretty shape but it was pretty damn good if I do say so!

It was chocolate cake with raspberry mouse filling and a white frosting, and it was amazing. Our cake was rotating, that and the other tiers were vanilla with chocolate mouse filling.

Drooling at the thought. I keep meaning to get back to the bakery that did our wedding cake but it's such an inconvenient location that I never make it there!

We took the top out of the freezer.  We had multi layered cake.  Top half was Vanilla, bottom half was chocolate.  With Vanilla Butter cream and a raspberry glaze in between the vanilla & chocolate layers.  It was really, really good on our wedding.  A year later? Not so much.  It was dry...except for Butter Creme.  Nothing can kill butter creme.  We each had a slice and through the rest out.  But that's a cute idea.  Maybe I will see if the bakery will make us a mini replica for our third anniversary this summer.

  • We didn't get to eat any cake at our wedding which I regret because we agonized over choosing it in the first place and it was supposed to taste so good!  We only did the cutting the cake thing and had a bit of icing.  So we did thaw it out at one year but it tasted weird.  Oh well.  We went back to our wedding venue for dinner on our first anniversary and that was really nice.
  • My DH and I got married down south in the state he grew up in and not near where we were living so my in-laws took the top layer home to freeze it.  Somehow it made its way up to the east coast and into our freezer (I think my in-laws drove it up in a cooler?). Anyway, we did have a bit of it on our 1st anniversary and I have to say it was kind of gross. Since the bakery that made our cake was in another state, I did have a small cake made at a different bakery in the same flavor with different icing (no fondant). Our original cake was vanilla almond on the bottom, red velvet in the middle, and carrot on top.  The aniversary cake was carrot with buttercream icing.
