Food Allergy

Elecare/neocate not helping eczema.

I posted beforeabout this so sorry if redundant. Ds has had mild to moderate eczema since he was about 3 months old. He is very itchy and his flare up are mainly in his face/back of head and back with a few spots on other areas of the body

He used to sleep 10-11 hours straight. Now he wakes up almost 5 times a night. This is partially due to the fact that we had to get rid of the swaddle because he rolls over on his belly. Anyways, sleeping kind of sucks now and I know he is itching

I was bfing and per the allergist and pedi ( he had skin tests done)went on an elimination diet with no dairy egg or nuts. His skin didn't really improve. He is now on elecare for about 2 weeks and still no difference in his eczema. We just started him on neocate but I'm wondering if his eczema is more than just food allergy related. We use all free and clear detergents, creams, we have no cats etc.  His skin sometimes looks worse and then better but only from using hydrocortisone

I just want some answers and fear I may not get them. I'm still pumping in case I need to go back to breast feeding but ds could be allergic to other things in my diet besides dairy egg or nut.The pedi won't allow him to have solids until we can get the eczema more under control. I really want to try some food as I'm worried it's not going to get a lot better with this formula.  Advice? Thoughts on what could be causing this!?

I'd definitely try the neocate and see how it goes after a week or two.  My son can't tolerate elecare, but can have neocate.  I have no idea why.

I agree with your docs that holding off on food for now seems wise.  What was he skin tested for, and what were the results?

  • Thanks! We have tried neocate a few times and his poop got super dark and he flared up the next  day so I went back to the elecare. We will try it again. They tested for 12 things, wheat, oat, egg, milk, nut. Soy, banana, and rice... Not sure of all. He only reacted to the nut, milk and egg.

Aidan's neocate poop is the darkest green imaginable, and I'm told that's perfectly normal.

It's totally possible (although unusual) for him not to be able to tolerate either one.  I hope that's not the case, for your sake, because i'm not sure what they do in that case.

  • my son doesn't eat eggs or nuts...barely any milk and has exczema...doc has not explanation. .Recommended regular VaniCream use- my mom had some Cuvitate at home- it cleared things up like magic- doc said it's ok but somewhat strong so he prescribed more mild Rx welll- it's not really working- My son gets it behind knees and elbows. Not sure that it's only food related. GL

This is a great question.  I definitely recommending washing everything in free and clear, not just his stuff.  His skin spends a lot of time touching your clothes.

Definitely might not be just food - Aidan has environmental allergies too that flare up his eczema.  CeraVe has been like magic for us.

  • I'm sorry you are going through this. My DD was covered with eczema from head to toe starting at 4 months - 9months. It was awful! We tried everything and finally had allergy tests done on her at 9 months. She tested off the charts for peanuts and tree nuts. She was also positive for eggs, wheat, soy and peas. We think her eczema was due to the fact my husband and I were eating peanut butter daily and then coming in contact with her. I have twins, so I needed to something quick and easy. I would usually eat a quick english muffin with PB or a PB&J sandwich at lunch. We found that once we got rid of all the nuts and peanut butter in the house, her eczema cleared up. Our allergist told us to try a strict bathing regiment, and I think that helped a lot too. We were told to bathe her daily, in luke warm water, using only a small amount of Dove sensitive soap. After, we took her out of the bath...we were to only lightly pat her dry , leaving her skin slightly moist. We spot treated her "hot spots" with the steroid cream, then we covered her entire body in Hydrolatum. We were told to only dress her in cotton clothes, so her skin could breathe. I do think it helped her eczema heal faster, and knock on wood she is doing great now! Dealing with all her allergies is a challenge though. Good luck!
