Kinda frustrated with nurses response...

So as I posted earlier, I have been having headaches everyday for the past couple of weeks, dull but constantly there, last night the headache was so severe it woke me up out of my sleep and the pain was so bad I threw up, tylenol did not work either..also had blurry vision for about an hour...so I called the nurse and told her and she called me back 2 hrs later and was like well did you have a lot of heaches before pregnancy? And I was like no I never really have headaches and I haven't this pregnancy until about 2 weeks ago (when my bp started to get high) and she was like well your going to have to call your primary dr and tell him/her about the headaches then they will probably send you to a neurologists..and she was like and the next time you wake up from a headache you should go to the ER..and I was like well don't you think this is pregnancy related? Especially with the blurred vision..and she was like we don't really know, headaches are a wide topic that can't easily be narrowed down to whats causing it..and she was like before I was pregnant I used to suffer from migranes, as soon as I got pregnant they stopped so you just don't know...ok um thanks? this really doesn't reassure me..so I said ok so you think I'm ok until my induction on Wed? Her response, again we really don't know just call your primary dr. and see what they say...

Great, this left me feeling no relief, I guess I will just continue the next 5 days with these headaches and hope for the best?!  Does this sound like a poor response or am I over-reacting?

I wouldn't wait.  Those are the EXACT symptoms my doc told me to watch for when my bp was high.  Can you call back and speak with your OB or MW.. NOT the nurse.  She doesn't sound like she knows what shes talking about and if the OB or MW still isn't helpful I would go to an urgent care clinic or possibly in to L&D.  High BP can cause all kinds of serious problems (like seizures) if not taken care of properly and I believe most Doc's choose to induce (after full term) if you are experiencing those symptoms.

  • That nurse is an idiot and I would complain about her.  Sounds like it could be BP related to me.  I would either go to the hospital or call the office again and demand to speak to someone else.

  • That is ridiculous... There is one nurse at my doc's office that is a complete idiot like that as well. I would call back and just say that you are unsure and would like to speak with the doctor on the phone.

I read your post earlier and it could be Pre-E. I wouldn't think that she would just tell you to call your regular doctor... I guarantee if you called your regular doctor that they would ask you why you aren't calling your OB.

I'm sorry hun, this sounds so frustrating!

I agree with all the PPs and either call back and demand to speak with your OB or MW or just head into L&D.  That nurse is an idiot to say that a headache could not be related to pregnancy! Especially since your BP started rising...and the blurred vision! I mean, I believe these are all symptoms that say it could be Pre-e! How irresponsible of that nurse to tell you that it's not her problem to try to figure it out!

  • nurses are can not legally give medical advice over the phone- even if she did know the answer, it is not within her scope of practice to advise you or detirmine whether or not your headache is related to your pregnancy. She is right the headaches can be a sign of many many different things that may or may not have relavance to yuor pregnancy and it is impossible for her or any provider to make that judgement over the phone. The safest thing for your and your baby is to go to the ER or your provider's office to be checked out in person- especially if you have BP issues.

Jpanetti above said it perfectly. I'm a health care provider and this is precisely what I was going to respond to your post with. Many people automatically jumped to saying the nurse is an idiot but that isn't necessarily the case. Just because you're pregnant and all the signs might point to preE does NOT mean it is even if it is highly probable! And the nurse is not able to tell you precisely what is going on by talking to you over the phone. She also can't diagnose you either .. that's outside of her scope of practice. I would speak with your OB for sure and I can pretty much tell you they'd suggest you go to the office as well to get checked out. The most the nurse can do via phone and the best she can do is to advise you to seek medical attention which I believe she was saying according to your post.

  • Also--- you mentioned that you might just wait several days to be seen. I understand that you're frustrated at not being able to receive a definitive response that would point you one way or another (had she told you "No you're fine" and something were wrong she could potentially be placing you in harms way. She told you to call your doctor or be seen right away in an ED which is actually the safest response -- so why not call your OB and your PCP just to make sure you cover all bases? Why would you wait this out in frustration specially if you seem concerned?
  • The nurse sounds like a snatch. They should have had you come in for a unrobe sample and the check your B/P, or told you to go tm the hospital for those things. Of it was me I would call and request those things. Sounds pregnancy related to me.
