Update to my pedi woes

I spoke to a managing partner yesterday (after 4 messages). Turns out the b*tch office manager wasn't even relaying my messages cause the dr. told me this was the first he's heard of this.

He's lowering my bill from $120 to $80. He will be the one to do our 18m check up and he's going to give us only what is strongly medically necessary (autism test, vaccines, etc.) and work with me on the price. He also explained that if JT had a mild ear infection than it's feasible that 1 dose of antibiotic could have cleared it (I find that highly unlikely but I just won't see that nut job any more).

Also, I found out my insurance sucks more than I thought. I have a $500 limit for any preventative care in any given year. So, after 1.5 appointments I hit that and am then responsible for 100% of what the dr office bills. And it's not even the allowable amount - it's the full amount. We are going to look into increasing our policy to make it a little better for the first 3 years of the kids' lives. My DH works for a small family business and we'll have to see if they will work with us on that since we are the only ones with small kids.

Thanks to everyone for helping me out with this.

  • If they won't work with you on the insurance, maybe look into an HSA or FSA. You're setting aside your own money (comes right out of your paycheck) but it's tax free and is meant to be used towards medical expenses.

  • Agree with SH about the FSA. We do this. I owed $1900 in January for my eye surgery. We took out $3500 for medical expenses through our FSA for January 2012-December 2012. So we just turned in the $1900 and they took care of it. Even though at that point they'd only taken a few hundred dollars out of H's check.

Hopefully I explained that well enough. They take so much tax free out of every paycheck but you can use up to your limit anytime of the year. So it's kind of like paying off your medical bill all at once with a credit card, but then you pay a little at a time all year on that credit card and don't get charged any interest.

We take the max out for daycare too, so all our daycare is paid with tax free income.

  • I've actually used an FSA account when I was working...I will absolutely find out if DH can set this up. Great idea - thanks ladies!
