WWJ13 Do/How Would J13 React?

Hypothetically speaking, imagine you were grocery shopping with a 2 year old and 11 month old twins. Everything is going great (well, except for rudely being cut in front of at the deli line)...kids are happy, no meltdowns, got everything you needed, etc when you get into line to pay. Twin #1 lets out a shriek of laughter and excitement...and the cashier literally shushes Twin 1 and tells him to be quiet.

You...

  • Look of death. If I was running errands with happy kids, I wouldn't want to waste my time doing anything more.... even if they deserved it.

  • I voted look of death, but I'm giving the cashier the benefit of the doubt and assuming it just came out without thinking about it. Maybe he or she does a lot of shushing at home. ;)

  • I gave her the look and kept my interactions with her as short and to the point as possible. If I didn't have the kids and frozen items with me, I would've gone to talk with a supervisor...I haven't ruled out a letter yet.

This grocery store has excellent management/customer service and this is thr first issue I've had there in the five years I've shopped there. I really try to give people the benefit of the doubt and treat CSRs with respect...but I thought it was way out of line for her to lean over the belt, get in his face, and shush him. He was LAUGHING for crying out loud. Now if he was 14 and cussing her out, I'd have no problem with her (or anyone else for that matter) putting him in his place.

  • I think that talking to management is going a little too far for something like this.

But I would definitely have a few choice words with the cashier AND give her the death stare.  How rude!

  • She would be getting an earful and so would the manager.

Yep. This would've really upset me!
  • Definitely some choice words. You don't parent my child. Especially a happy laughing baby. That's all kinds of ridiculous. Then I would tell the manager they have a cashier with some attitude problems.

  • I would ignore or give the look of death. Depends on my mood.
  • Look of death followed by being told off. My friends family was out with another family for lunch (consisting of four adults and two 18 month ish toddlers). The girls were making happy noises and not being overly loud and the waiter came over and asked them to leave. My friend was horrified and left quickly. They were stopped by other diners on the way out, who were disgusted that they had been asked to leave, as they were enjoying watching the children (kind old people, not pervs). She is more reserved then I am. There would have been quite a scene if I was there. WTF stupid, child hating people.

  • Wow! I would probably do the death stare and talk to management. Thats not right. I wouldn't necessarily want them to get in a lot of trouble but to be talked to. Working at a grocery store, I know theres a lot of things I'd love to say to some people. But its pretty obvious you're not supposed to say anything.

A few years ago I worked with a lady who smacked a kids hand, who was leaning on the belt. The parents, obviously were pissed and she got fired. Poor lady, I don't think she knew what she did was wrong. Trying to say it without coming off rude or wrong...she wasn't on the same thinking level as most people? Does that sound wrong? I really don't want to offend anyone. If I so I'm sorry..but what I mean is she just didn't think it was wrong to do.

That's a tough situation, but as a store owner, it's a huge liability to have an employee who assaults others on the job. Regardless of mental capacity. I hope she was able to find another position where she doesn't have to interact with little ones.
