I'm very crunchy, and I am offended by some of these comments. Do I plan on BFing DD until she's almost 4? No, but I could decide to do so when she's there. Nonetheless, whether or not you would do it, it doesn't mean it is "wrong", "sick", "perverted" for a mother to do so. It is commonplace in the world to BF that long. Regardless of the reason why, the fact remains.
Women need to stop putting down other women for their choices unless it is harmful to the child, and unless the mother is forcing the boy against his will to BF, she is not harming her child by BFing until 4.
BTW, DD knows EXACTLY where her milk is- and not only does she "ask" for it by signing "Milk", she pulls my shirt up and can pull my boob out and latch herself without my help. And DD is NOT "Too old".
You are right. My DH's cousin nursed her son until he was a little over 3 years old, he's now a bright, confident second grader...no "weird" attachment issues...like some people seem to think can happen. We have already started the weaning process with DD (she doesn't ask for it any more so it's really her who's leading the weaning)...but I'm not against extended breastfeeding....I do however feel this photo is set up in a way that is disturbing to me...her pose is so unnatural and not very affectionate looking. I think they could have done a much more loving photo so it doesn't make extended bfing seem like this big controversial thing but rather a beautiful thing.
I agree with Robin here. The set up is what is so off-putting. There seems to be no connection between the mom and son in the picture. I looked at the rest of the pics from the article and thought they were lovely.
This really torques my chain.
EVERYTHING from the picture, to the title, to the article. "Mom
enough?" Really? Way to make AP parents sound like sanctimonious, self
righteous a-holes. Every mother is "Mom enough!!". And the picture? Nobody nurses like that. And they
purposely found a giant 3yr old. Another passive aggressive attack at
making natural minded moms look like freaks. It is the extreme end... I know they are bring light to the subject of AP, but it is obviously done in sexual nature.

SICK was the first thing that ran through my head. I breast fed and am for breastfeeding, but that kid is way too old.
I can completely understand children breastfeeding at this age if and only if they live in squalor and need the nutrients. It is completely MY OWN OPINION, but I think if a mom is nursing past age two she has some sort of attachment issues.
