I mean I love that extended BF (or BF at all for the matter) is being talked about. I BF an about to be 2 year old with no end in sight. I love that it is on the cover..
But I don't like how it is portrayed I guess. It is TIME and it is meant to be shocking and start dram because drama sells. Sometimes a bit of controversy is what people need to learn things. But I really see this doing is making extended BF and other practices seem even more in left field and will spark mom wars. Just because I feel this is the right way to raise my kid does not mean i want all other moms to feel horrible about the way they raise their own kids. I mean "are you mom enough" and "why attachment parenting drives some moms to extremes" is not normalizing anything. Especially since BF for an extended period of time, baby wearing, and gentle parenting comes so natural to me that I never found the need to read books about it until I got curios. It is hardly that extreme.
I guess I will have to read the article itself though and see....

I totally agree. The headlines are AWFUL - "are you too attached?" for the quiz. WTF?
I havent' read the articles and i'm not sure I want to.
I long ago filed Time under "crappy/sensational" news along with CNN, all local news, and daily news shows. It's not news or facts, it's "stories" they are selling. It's crap.

I hate it. I hate that it is obviously trying to play up the shock factor. I hate that it is a magazine using the so-called "mom-wars" to sell more copies. I hate that "media" capitalizes on women's innate desire to care for their children in the best possible way and that women pay more attention to them than to their own instincts. I hate that they chose to release it during a time when we traditionally celebrate motherhood instead of questioning it.
And most of all, I hate that it made me defensive to see it first posted on FB, before I even read the comments, because I knew what a mixed response there would be.

But...cover up please. I don't care if the baby is 5 years or 5 weeks, respect those around you.
I also feel that the child pictured has been exploited. There is no way in hell I would let them put my son's picture on the cover of Time in this way.
The part of the article that really got me was the quote from Sears on working mothers from The Complete Book of Christian Parenting...
"[Some] mothers choose to go back to their jobs quickly simply because they don't understand how disruptive that is to the well-being of their babies. So many babies in our culture are not being cared for in the way God designed, and we as a nation are paying the price."
Sheesh. Give me a break.

Hi Ladies, Lurker here. I just popped over to this board because of this article - I'm normally on 2IF. I'm an AP and I BF'd until my DD was almost 3. I'm angry about all the negative responses to the article, but this (above) is a good point. The way they present it is to get the shock value, not to help people realize that it's normal. Beyond frustrating.

Why cover up? Are you ashamed or uncomfortable with the human body? The child is eating. It's hardly indecent.
As for exploitation, again, Why? He's eating.

I kind of like the cover in some way too - I like your description of the mom as "bad-a$$"
But I HATE the title and skimming the article headlines and blurbs makes me believe that they choose this standing boy to sensationalize the act of an older toddler nursing. Which sucks. So I guess that I don't like the cover in context with the words.
And I think it's funny people say to cover up - the woman in the cover isn't showing any more skin - in fact, less skin, than a swimsuit model or your average victorias secret magazine.
But...cover up please. I don't care if the baby is 5 years or 5 weeks, respect those around you.

5 weeks or 5 years, I won't be covering up, and I don't consider it disrespect.
This. If you expect me to force my kid to be stifled under a blanket while he eats I expect the same out of you. The way people chew food is way more disgusting than my infant nursing.
Whatever...my son won't eat under a blanket and I think covering up is more noticeable then not. Have you ever seen a mom BF? If you do the two shirt method you have top shirt covering top boob, under tank top covering stomach. Baby/kid head covering breast and nipple inside the mouth...unless my kid is an X-men and can go invisible you can't see the breast, he and the shirts are in the way.
Besides breastfeeding is natural and you see more walking into the mall or flipping through TV. Hell, I see more breast walking into a government office half the time just because of cleavage and shirt choices ! Do you wear a turtle neck every day? Sorry, but if you don't like it look away.
But...cover up please. I don't care if the baby is 5 years or 5 weeks, respect those around you.
I also feel that the child pictured has been exploited. There is no way in hell I would let them put my son's picture on the cover of Time in this way.
Haha. Cover up please! I don't want to see your booooooobs!
But seriously though...Anyone have an opinoion on what this kid will think when he looks back at this in 10-15 years? I am torn between thinking he will be proud of his mom for taking a stand for her beliefs or he will be embarrassed and have some weird issues...

Um, no! I didn't even get to breast feed for very long and hell, I'm not even AP or whatever. But it's just a breast. Grow the hell up. Really.

how exactly? other than the obvious height weight age? the only reason it bothers ppl is bc theyre moronic enough to sexualize it.
Wow ok first I couldn't cover my boy if I wanted to in public he just giggles and pulls it off thinking it's a game so I don't bother, I always have a hand ready to cover my nipple should he pull off and look around while in a restaurant or more crowded, fancy place and like pp said double shirts cover everything, baby covers the rest.
As for the kid looking back that is my same thought though I think the photo is awesome I am unsure he will be embarrassed about it during those teen years etc when kids are mean, unless of course breastfeeding becomes normal and no one is afraid of it or thinking it's weird then I think he would be proud. I don't think his real proud of his mum reaction will be until he is older and out of school.....this being if he is not homeschooled
Hard to say because he will, be growing up in an inviroment where it's okay to bf toddlers I hope my son is happy with our parenting choices and I have been side eyed a lot but he also amazes people all the time and I say see love AP and letting him learn at his pace
Sorry if this doesn't make exact sense typing between BF my 10.5month old

*Awaiting flames here* I consider myself to be a fairly AP-oriented parent but I've certainly felt the pressure of not being "mom enough" by those who are more extreme in their AP practices. It feels like sometimes it can become a competition in martyrdom...

Really? Are you just dense?
I BFed both of my kids for a long time and did it privately and publicly, but I think it is pretty silly to not acknowledge the difference between BFing a 5 week old in public an BFing a 5 year old in public.
The most basic? A 5 week old can only eat breastmilk (or formula). They can't snack on fruit or crackers or drink water or juice or milk. So it makes perfect sense that a baby with a tiny stomach who needs to eat frequently would require the mother to breastfeed whenever she needs to. I fed on demand and would breastfeed whenever my baby needed it.
A five year old does NOT *need breastmilk on demand. They can eat a zillion things to tide them over before they get home. So for a 5 year old to walk over to their mother, pull her shirt up, and start eating is a little more shocking to the average bystander.
Is that right (the shock factor)? I don't know. But it is undertandable that an average person would do a double take at the 5 year old and not the 5 week old.

If he's not been taught to hypersexualize breasts and appreciate normal physiologic use of the human body, then - when he's 13, he'll probably be a little "uh, mom, why are you trying to embarass me", but not horrid about it, but that's what teenagers do. When he's 30? Maybe he'll be proud of her for making BF'ing easier for his wife.
