i vaguely remember this coming up on the board and so i wanted to ask if any mamas out there have experienced this.
DS is slow for language, which is probably okay since he's growing up trilingual, but what's strange is that once he masters a word he says it a few times and then loses interest in saying it. my gut feeling is that it's not regression and that he just isn't interested in saying most words once he's mastered them, but it seems like this behavior is unusual. any experiences or thoughts? TIA!
Re: mastering word and then not using it anymore?
is he normal for his age with his language development?
Dillon had a ton of words and talked pretty early. He had a thing for all words that began with the sh sound at the beginning. One of his first were was shade and he said it ALL the time. Then one day he no longer said it. I don't think I have heard him say it since...
Totally normal.
After 7 years trying to concieve, 3 failed IUIs and 2 failed IVFs, my third IVF was a success!
My Christmas baby turned into a turkey bird! Dillon Richard was born at 34 weeks, 5 days on November 28, 2009 after 10 weeks on bedrest for preeclampsia.

I should have elaborated, but I was tired. sorry. He isn't and we're starting speech therapy. But that doesn't mean that it's always that way! At our 18 month appointment the pediatrician said lets give it another couple of months. So at about 20 months he seemed to be saying a little bit more - thank you, okay, a few different words, etc. But still didn't use them regularly and then stopped. So I had him evaluated and he has a 33% delay which is enough to qualify for services through the state.
Do you have an appointment coming up at 18 months? Discuss it then, especially with the multiple languages to see what their rec is about where he "should" be. I thought he was just a late talker. He was on the later end for crawling and walking but didn't do either until he could do both perfectly and unassisted. So I thought it would be the same for speech. But around 20 months I just felt like it was time to have him seen. I think you go with your doctor's thoughts and your gut. I know people mean well with stories of geniuses who supposedly didn't utter a word until they were 3 (at least that's what I was getting!) but I'm glad we looked into it.
If you want any more details feel free to ask!
I brought this up recently. C is behind in speech and would master words then stop using them.
I brought it up to the pedi and he agreed that he was probably behind in speech, but said the mastering words and no longer using them was normal. We haven't had him evaluated yet. I was comfortable waiting to see if there is a language explosion around 2 (which there has been).
TTC since May 2006. After 3 failed Clomid cycles, 2 failed Injectibles/IUIs, 2 failed IVFs and 1 failed FET, we moved on to adoption!
Last ditch FET resulted in BFP, and identical twin girls!
