Creepy Eye Gook

This past week DD has woken up with eye extra crud in the corners of her eyes.  Every day its gotten worse.  This morning both eyes were crusted shut.  She doesn't have pink eye, her eyes don't appear to be itchy or extra watery.  During the day I've noticed a bit of extra gunk in the corners of her eyes, but nothing close to what happens over night.

I haven't called the doctor because I don't know if this is anything that they can treat or if it is just a wait it out sort of thing.  She's had eye crud like this in the past but its cleared up before it got this bad.

Brooklyn had this 2wks ago and they gave me eye drop (not fun to put in) the doctor said it could have been caused from a sinus infection backup or eye infection.

I thought it ws allergys at first so I gave her 1/2 dose of clarition but it didn't seem to help thats when I brought her in.

Viral pink eye?  It's really just a cold in the eye so there's not much you could do other than maybe flush the eye with saline.  C's pedi told me it's because they can't get the gunk out (via snot/coughing) as well as adults so it just comes out whatever opening it can.  C's gets it in his right eye (doesn't drain very well) every time he gets a cold.  If it is getting worse though, you might just call and see what they say.

One of the items on my "call pedi if..." list is if there is fluid/discharge coming from eye(s) and the eye is not pink or look irritated.  I would give the nurse line a call and see if they would want to take a look or if there is anything else I need to be on the lookout for.

  • I would call the nurse's line.  DS has had gunk in his eye and it turned out to be an ear infection that had then spread to his eyes.  The pedi prescribed antibiotics for the infection.  Oh and the only reason he was even diagnosed was because we had his 12 month check-up.  I didn't realize until then that gunk in the eye could mean an infection.  Embarrassed
