Pregnant after a Loss

HCG not doubling at 6 weeks 3 days

I think i'm looking at a miscarriage. Long story short had some bleeding sunday had hcg monday it was 19200 saw hb on ultrasound it was 112. Today HCG only went up to 26.470. I think it should double. Anyone have any success stories? No bleeding or cramping at all since.

  • With betas that high its not uncommon for them not to full double. You saw a heartbeat and that is good. Long and short of it is I can't tell you what is going to happen by these numbers. Keep the faith its not over till its over.

  • I don't think it doubles after getting to 2000 or so.  here is something i've seen online so you are looking at a doubling time of more than 96 hours with your numbers based on this chart and when i put your numbers into the calculator it comes out to a doubling time of 103 hours which seems right on target:

    "Normal" Doubling Time
    hCG levels Doubling Time
    Under 1200 mIU/ml 31-72 hours
    Between 1200 to 6000 mIU/ml 72-96 hours
    Over 6000 mIU/ml more than 96 hours

everything i read says that after you hit 2k u/s is a much better indicator of a viable pregnancy than hcg numbers.  what did your doctor say?
    BFP #1: 3/28/09: DD born 12/11/09
    BFP #2: 11/16/11: M/C at 7 weeks
    BFP #3: 03/24/12: C/P 03/28/12
BFP #4: 04/26/12: please be our baby
  • I read that too. Seems like everything emphasized the doubling. I see my doctor tomorrow for another ultrasound. Saw the heartbeat on Monday. Hoping everything still looks ok but after one loss it's hard to be positive.

My betas did not double and I had bleeding/spotting for a month. I can't remember what the specific # was but I remember when the doctor told me my heart sank. Hang in there, fingers crossed that everything's fine!!!

  • do you know how many days post ovulation you are?  HCG levels do not double every 48 hours after they hit a certain level.  Check out www.betabase.info.  At 23dpo, my beta was 13875 and at 26dpo it was 27174 (did not quite double in 3 days).  I saw a lovely little hb on an u/s at 7w1d and heard the hb with a doppler at 10w3d.  I don't think you have anything to worry about.

  • Ohh! I can comment -- don't stress just yet :)  I had betas at 6w exactly, and again 6w2d.. mine was very similar to yours.. first was around 19-20K, second was around 30K.. it had gone up, but not doubled.. OB nurse made me panic thinking I was going to miscarry because she simply said, "well, they haven't doubled".. but, as PPs posted.. everything I read said they don't typically double once you reach that high!!  Anyway -- ended up going for an emergency ultrasound (we hadn't seen a hb yet) at 6w4d to "see" what was going on, and LO looked fabulous :)  Plus.. I had had some spotting, too.. I thought we were doomed.. but, 28 weeks later, and LO is great!!!

    FX that it's perfectly normal!!!

  • Sounds totally fine. Once they hit 6000, it takes more than 4 days to double. DD's betas at around the same time were around 15000, 20000, and 30000 (3 days apart each), so it took 6 days to double for her.

  • It does not really double, it should go up around 2/3 or 66%. Yours is almost there. I think you're still ok. I would have them checked again in a few days just to make sure. I know this causes a lot of worry especially after a loss, but just hang in there. ;)
