Trying to Get Pregnant

What does your boss think?

Good morning ladies!

I apologize if this questions has already been posted but I thought it would be an interesting one to see how pregnancy did/might go over in your place of work.

I work in a Labor and Delivery Unit at my local a hospital. My boss is a CNM with two children of her own. I completely adore her, She is a great boss and too funny to top it off.

HOWEVER,

I have not been in her department (as a full time employee) for very long and as I am one of the youngest ladies the older gals are always talking about when DH and I are going to have kids. Whenever my boss hears little pieces of these conversations she immediately makes a remark about 'don't you go and have a baby right now!" or 'babies are such hard work, they take a lot of time' and things like that.

I know she isn't trying to be hurtful or insensitive but it makes me extremely nervous for that fateful day when I am going to have to tell her that I am expecting.

How did you bosses take the news when you told them you were expecting? Or do you have a boss you will be nervous to announce the news to when the time comes?

Have a great day!!

Re: What does your boss think?

  • My bosses were happy for me even though it definitely put a strain on the workload while I was out.  I think your boss should shut it.  I hope she is professional about it when the time does come.

in a different situation here because I had met with my boss and explained that I would be out a lot for Dr. appt's. due to our IF.   He was very supportive, being a father of 3.

He figured out on his own that I was pg around 7w when I was feeling crappy at work.   So he asked and I didn't deny.   He was happy for me, knowing what it took to get there.

  • My boss has made a couple comments in jest recently, but nothing offensive. Although it will definitely not be a fun time for him when I am on maternity leave, telling bossman is truly the least of my worries.

ETA: My comment seems kind of insensitive. For the record, I'm sorry that your boss is kind of putting the pressure on you.

  • My boss was really happy and surprised when I told him when I was 25 weeks pregnant.  He's a big fan of kids and had just recently had his first grandchild born.

I don't think it's something you should worry about, just roll with it when the time comes.

I have a female supervisor who is rooting for me during TTC journey, she hasn't mentioned who will do my duties temporarily when I'm out but I know she's expecting to hear my BFP news and she'd be happy for me.
    Me: 32, DH: 34.
Trying since Jan 2011. Unexplained IF.
    2 IUIs = BFN.
    1 IVF (Dec 2013) = BFN.
    FET, 2 frosties (June 13, 2014)

    14dp5dt-June 27 -BFP, beta 2061. 2nd beta >5000, 3rd beta >5000, 2 sacs 06/30.
Twin Girls - 02/11/15 - at 37 weeks (no NICU, home with me at 3 days).
  • My mom is my boss...

I do find it annoying when people with kids are telling us things like your boss is telling you. I usually listen and try to ask more questions relating to the issue they are bringing up.

I think they are trying to be helpful and don't realize that it really isn't. It is kind of like people telling you to relax in order to get pregnant.

Sorry you are having to deal with this.

  • I haven't been through this personally, but a few girls I work with have. One is actually on maternity leave now and the other is just about 12 weeks along. Our office is made up of mostly women and our boss is a older man, and he loves kids and is very open to all of us about that. he embraces anyone who is expecting and really harps on us all spending time with our families and not letting our work get in the way! it's great! :)
  • I am not sure what to expect.....I know she'll appear excited (yay, congrats, etc), but I know how she is, she's weird.  I was told by a friend last summer that when I get pregnant someday don't be surprised if she takes it personally (like I got pregnant for no other reason than to mess up her department and have to find someone to cover me for 3 months).

Also, she's pretty nosey so once I tell her I really don't want to deal with whatever intrusive questions that she might ask.

  • I'm sorry to hear your boss is being insensitive.  Intentional or not, it can be pretty upsetting/annoying.

As for my boss, he is very hot and cold.  I think he will be supportive, but I would prefer to tell him on one of his good days.

  • My boss can be kind of hard to read sometimes, so I'm not really sure what to expect when I tell her I'm pregnant. Even if she was worried about the workload I doubt she would let on or mention it.

To be honest, I don't really care what she thinks or says. It's our decision to have children and when to have them, not hers. And if/when the fertility treatments work, I'm going to be too excited to give a crap what anyone thinks about it.

  • I think my boss will be happy for me, and honestly I think he has been expecting me to announce a pregnancy for several months.  He doesn't know that we are TTC, but he has been mentioning that we need to set up a time so that I can train him on part of my job that he would probably cover if I were ever "out for an extended period of time" (his words).

As for me?  I love my boss dearly.  I'm extremely fortunate that my boss will be nothing but thrilled when I get pregnant.  He keeps hinting that he wants DH and me to have children soon.  Oh and it helps that my boss is my father.  Wink

    This is me too!

  • My boss was very supportive and did what he had to to make sure I was comfortable with my duties. I haven't told him that we're trying again, but there are a few people at work know. I just don't think it's something I want to announce until it happens.

I've never been pregnant, but I've worked through several other worker's pregnancies (including 2 of my boss's) and they are never looked upon negatively. So I'm pretty secure telling my boss when it happens. I'm just nervous because where I work, only management gets paid time off for maternity leave, so we are making sure to keep a nest egg and save my vacation time for whenever it happens.

But I'm sorry your boss is making those comments to you! That would make me nervous as well, but don't let it keep you from enjoying that BFP once you get it.

  • I'm honestly not sure what to expect. My boss has three kids, so I'd expect him to be understanding. BUT, we're very short staffed and gov't contracting is a very cut throat business. It's going to be difficult on them if/when I get KU. We haven't had anyone get KU in the 2.5 years I've been at my current job, so I really have no idea what to expect.

DH and I have had the discussion about me leaving work all together after we have a baby. We are just going to roll with it once we get to that point and figure it out.

ETA: I have no intention of telling anyone I work with until I'm either 12 weeks OR I can't hide it anymore. Which ever comes later.

  • My manager has had fertility issues, so that makes me a little nervous because I don't want to create an awkward environment. But, she did catch me on TB the other day reading a pregnancy related thread (that was awkward) and she made a joke about me getting pregnant and seemed alright with it.

We have a few people on maternity leave right now and one girl just came back and she has, overall, seemed fine with it. I guess we'll find out when I get a BFP.

  • My situation is probably a bit different.  My boss is family (DH's cousin) and she has dealt with serious IF.  She had 3 IVF's and has 1 5 year old DD and will not be having anymore.  I'm really the last close family member that only has 1 child and while I know she will be happy for me, I can't help but worry about her feelings.  I know her IF should not hinder my plans for the future, but I do think about it.

  • I haven't been pregnant, so I haven't had to break this news.  Somehow, the topic of TTC came up with one of my previous managers and it was great.  She's not that much older than me and had just started TTC, so I passed on a lot of advice and even steered her over to FF. Smile
