Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Anyone else's LO HATE tummy time?

As soon as I put LO down, he starts crying and just gets really mad! Even after I pick him up he cries for a good 10 mins(my LO barely ever cries) I feel so bad, like i'm torturing him yet I know it's important for him. Any ideas? Anyone's LO similar?

  • Mine hates it with a passion too. I just try to get a minute or two here and there but I go with him.

  • I'm going through the same thing.  Even if I put interesting toys or a mirror by her face, it still doesn't help.  Our pediatrician said not to worry because she's got excellent muscle control for her age.

DD enjoys tummy time now, but at first she hated it too.  She enjoys to look at herself in the mirror though, so we got a floor mirror and that helped.  She started to enjoy it more when she was strong enough to hold her head up and when she started rolling onto her tummy.  She will start fussing though when she's tired of it.  She'll do it maybe 10 minutes at a time.

  • Kael HATES it to!  Try putting a pillow under your LOs chest, I've found that it seems to make tummy time a bit more bareable for Kael.

DD has gotten better but still will only do a few minutes - she does like to lay tummy-to-tummy with me or DH and will hold her head up and push up off our chests to see us - I don't think it's quite the same work-out as on the floor but it's better than nothing.

  • DD only liked it at that age, if she was fed and not tired at all. Only for a few mins. Now at 4.5 months she is strong, and lifts right up, rolls over, etc so doesnt mind it, but rarely stays there for long.

I wouldn't stress about it. A minute here or there. Most of our tummy time was on my chest.

  • My LO isn't a fan. My mom said I hated it too when I was a baby and I learned to just roll everywhere I wanted to go. If I brace LO with my hands while he is on his tummy, he'll tolerate it more. Or try to put him on your chest for some tummy time.

  • Try using the Boppy pillow underneath.  Mine seems to enjoy it longer with a pillow underneath her chest.

  • Do you have a changing pad?  My DS also hated tummy time until I started letting him play on the pad.  I slowly got him to work up to 10-15 minutes and now he will lay on his tummy anywhere I put him.  (btw... I would take the changing pad and put it on the living room floor).

  • She HATED it for a long time. Just recently we notices a change in the sense that she tolerates being in her belly longer (maybe 10 min more or less). We have done many things just to get the those 10 minutes. Lol. We recline ourselves and do tummy time on our chest. We do it using the bobby pillow. We walk around the house with her tummy down resting on our forearms. Everybody kept telling us to use mirrors or a favorite toy but that didn't work. Recently we discovered that she LOVES my dad's 50 gallon fish tank and stares in amazement. So we recline next to it and put her on her tummy. Keep trying because it will get better. Good luck.

  • My one daughter loves being on her tummy and our other daughter HATES it. Of course she needs it the most because her head is a little bit flat...so I try so much to have her always nap during the day on her tummy. I'll let her fall asleep on her back and then i put her on her tummy when she's sleeping. We're lucky that her neck muscles are really strong even though she hate being on her tummy though, so we just more do it to help her head from getting too flat.
