Oh my gosh some of these responses scare the crap out of me. I do not want to push for over an hour! That just seems exhausting after a long labor. I have no idea how you ladies did that!

For me, the pushing phase was less painful. Tiring, but not torture. My baby was also posterior, which really slowed things down.

  • I pushed for less than a minute.

No idea how long transition lasted for. I think about 3 hours, but only because it was severely stalled and I went from a 10 back to a 4 and back to a 10 again in an hour and a half.

  • I have no idea about transition but I pushed for 25 mins with DS#1 & 12 mins with DS#2.
  • With #1 I pushed only a coue times so maybe 5 minutes but less than 10. I had an epidural though so I know I labored him down for a while before the nurses ever bothered to check on me.

With my second I pushed less than 5 minutes and I know this because I was barely at the hospital 10 minutes before she arrived on the scene.

No idea about transition except to say my labors were fast and furious so they were likely near the entire labor each time.

5 hours of labor and 2.5 of pushing
  • 10 hours of labor (first contraction to first push) then 2 freaking hours of pushing. DD was face-up and got stuck (so I found out afterward)

1 hour 45 min of pushing. Total labor was 11 hours starting with my water breaking while I was sleeping. The baby crowned after maybe a half hour of pushing so everyone thought it would just be a few more contractions, but it turns out the cord around her neck was holding her in. I don't know how long transition took, maybe a few minutes? I guess it didn't make much of an impression.
  • Transition was 15-30min for me...pushing 20 min.

(I had 15hours of early labor and a good 2 hours of active labor contractions before transition hit...knock on wood, it goes that fast again!)

  • I pushed for around 5 hours and ended up needing vacuum assistance. My daughter's head was turned and wedged in my pelvic bone. My labor up until that point had been fairly quick. I was so involved with the pushing that I had no idea it was taking so long until I looked at the clock and hours would have passed since the last time I looked.

  • My transition lasted about 2 hours and I pushed for an hour. An hour of pushing is on the fast side for a first time mom.

  • #1: transition for 45 minutes, pushed 8hrs, then had a c/s

#2: transition for maybe 30 minutes (really don't know), pushed for 15-30 minutes or so (HypnoBirthing, so my recollection of time is way off)

    Around 15 minutes of pushing.

Not sure about transition--less than an hour, I would say.

  • 2 hours

It helps that you have no concept of time and how long things are taking.  (At least for me!)

  • 10 minutes w/ my first, max.  Not sure how long transition lasted exactly - I had the "oh *** I'm not safe here at my house" realization and that's when we headed to the hospital - I was having the urge to take a BM so that might have been the start of transition.  That would make my transition last about 30 minutes.  At the hospital I was having a VERY hard time not pushing when I arrived (needed to wait to get to a room) and I am positive that was transition, so in that case it would have been 15 min.  So probably somewhere in-between 15 to 30 min.

Labor & delivery start to finish was less than 3 hours  for me.

  • I pushed for three hours with my first.  He was OP and I had an epidural, I'm not sure how long transition lasted.

DS2 I pushed for ten minutes and transition was maybe 30-45 minutes.

DS3 I pushed for 15 minutes (maybe, I can't remember, I'll have to check with DH) and transition was about 10-15 minutes.

  • 1.5 hours with my first. I have major respect for women that push longer. It felt like FOREVER. As for transition, I can't tell you. I was suckered into an epi right at transition with my first. It wore off for pushing.

  • I don't know how long transition lasted but my whole labor was 6 hours and I pushed for about 20-30 min.  Next time I plan to let my body push on its own (it started to with DD but the OB wanted her out since she was a preemie) so even if it takes a while I think it won't be the hold your breath kind of pushing.

  • almost 3.5 hours, felt like forever. so exhausting.

transition i am not sure, its kind of a blur. she said i was 8cm and pretty soon after i was pushing... so maybe 15 minutes. my labor went incredibly fast after the midwife broke my water... i went from 3 to 8cm in a little over an hour. i had a pitocin induction however due to being 2 weeks overdue, so maybe that made things faster... not sure as i have nothing to compare to!

  • Transition was about an hour for me and pushing took one hour.

Pushing for three or four hours is normal. Having a long transition is normal. It's so unpredictable.

  • I've only had one experience, and I didn't really know I was in labor. I was having contractions but they just felt like menstrual cramps. I only called my doctor because there was blood when I went to the bathroom. I got to the hospital and was 7 cm, they broke my water, and 15 minutes later I was pushing. I pushed through 2 maybe 3 contractions, and she was born! So maybe only 10 or 15 minutes.

  • I pushed over 2.5 hours. Transition was... I have no idea. Maybe an hour? Everyone thought lo would be born sooner, but her cord was wrapped around her and kept sucking her back in. Lol. She was never in any danger, but would hbe been born much sooner had it not been for that. The CNM cut the cord and she popped out.

  • Out of lurking....

I pushed for 1 hour with my son before he started into distress (heart rate dropping) and ended up with an episiotomy (with tearing as well - 2nd degree).  However, my contractions only ever came about 3 minutes apart throughout my entire labour/pushing stage.  I have no idea how long transition lasted as I found out I was fully dilated before even going to the hospital.  I called my midwife at 6:30pm after timing contractions for 1 hour (contractions were 5 min. apart at this point) and I was fully dialate and started involuntary pushing at 10pm.  I had a short labour and my midwife said had my son not been 8lbs. 14oz. (with a head size over the 97th percentile) she said we would have never made it to the hospital - his large head was both a blessing and a curse! =)

  • Probably not what you want to hear...

With my first I had my water broken at 5 cm, she was delivered 2 hours later, I pushed for ~25 minutes.

With my second I had my water broken at 5 cm, he was delivered 1 hour later, I pushed for 8 minutes.

  • Transition was 30-45 min, pushing was 20.  Probably 5 or 6 contractions. I've had alot of people say 'that's it?!', especially because DD was my first. Our prenatal class teacher really stressed that we needed to stay relaxed as much as possible and let gravity help us, and I swear that's what helped me.

  • 1 hour 40 minutes
  • I pushed for 30 mins. My whole labor was 4 hours 10 mins.

  • Transition lasted about ... 90 minutes to 2 hours according to my husband. According to me, it lasted FOREVER.

Pushing was about 80 minutes total, maaaybe 40 of which was with the doctor there to catch. Maybe. It seemed way shorter.  SO MUCH BETTER THAN TRANSITION. I had a lot of shallow pushes to get LO to crown, and then got talked through the last, oh, 4 or 5 contractions by the doctor from crown until fully born.
