Birthday party time/naps?

What time are yall doing your LOs birthday parties, especially with other LOs involved?

We'll have a bunch of kids ages 1-4 at her party and I'm wanting to do a splash part with little pools/sprinkler, etc outside. Only thing is it's Texas, and will be super hot. We'll provide shade in the backyard (and of course people are welcome to come and go in the house with the AC), but I noticed this week that our backyard naturally gets really shady by around 4pm. Is it crazy to consider doing a kid's bday party from 3-6 or so? We're still on 2 naps, around 930 and 2 most days, so that's perfect for us, but I don't want every other mom to hate me :)

Do what works for you! We are planning on around 1 because I want to have lunch served and then doing a pool party. But my parents backyard is pretty shady all day.

  • I don't think it's crazy to do 3-6.... unless it's on a Sunday, then I might be a little annoyed :)  We're having M's party at noon because all of the family is coming from 1-2 hours away, and we wanted them to be able to have a nice long visit.  Plus, M naps at about 10 and 2, so it should work out to have lunch/cake etc then put her down for her second nap... that's what I'm hoping anyway!

eta:  There won't be any kids at the party.

  • We're doing 3:00, but we don't really have many other little kids.  I think and evening party would be fine.  I would think 3-6 would work well.  It would be after an afternoon nap and and before bedtime.

We're doing ours 4:00-7:00 because of naps. All the other LO's that our coming get up from their naps around 3 or 4, so we scheduled around their and DD's naps.  :)  Like PP said, do what works best for you and your family.

  • We're doing 4pm start time because he will definitely be awake from his afternoon nap and have nursed by then. I'd rather have him get to bed a little late (or even go to bed while guests are still hanging out) than miss his afternoon nap. To me, that seems a recipe for disaster. We'll only have a few little kids here - none as young as Max - and many of them don't have regular nap times.

  • I agree, do what works for you, and if others can't make it, then they can't make it. We are doing noon, b/c LO usually wakes from his morning nap around 11:30, then his afternoon nap is around 3. A couple of the kids who are invited take naps around noon b/c they are 2 or 3 and down to one nap a day. I'd love for them to come if they can, but I know I can't cater to everyone.

  • We are doing a 3 pm start time. It wwas either that or 11 am - 2 pm. This way people can stick around and filter out as they wish. We didn't put an end time on the invite.

  • I agree with PPs, it has to be what works best for you. We are planning on 1 or 2pm,(haven't made the final decision) without and end time on the invite. We really don't have many kids coming and none as young as C. He's consistanlty taking a 930/1000 nap which lasts anywhere from 1 to 2 hours. He's second nap is a crap shoot and can start anywhere from 230 to 430 so it would be difficult to plan around that. The good news is he's not that miserable if he completely misses his second nap. I think if he's being entertained by everyone he'll be OK. And I don't want to start too late because knowing our families and friends they will linger at our house all night long!!!

  • ours is scheduled from 3:30-6:30.  My older son has a tball game that runs until about noon, then Liam normally naps from around 1-2:30 in the afternoon, so we had to do late afternoon.  I don't see anything wrong with it, we have a few other kids coming to ours, too.
