How long is too long of a nap?

For the past 2-3 weeks, DD has been taking a 1 hr nap, a 3 hr nap, then 1-2 15-20 min cat naps in the evening.  At night she is sporadic but usually gives me at least a 3 hr stretch every night, sometimes going up to 7 although that has only happened 3 times total in her life.

For her 3 hr nap, I always have to wake her up at the 3 hour mark (who knows how long she'd sleep if I let her go).   So the question is, how long is too long of a nap?  Should I wake her before 3 hrs or should I just let her sleep as long as she wants?   I know every LO is different, but just curious of some opinions to make sure I'm doing the right thing.  Thanks!!

  • I almost always let my LO sleep as long as he will go.  The only exception is if he falls asleep before his last feeding at 9:00 pm.  Otherwise I just follow his lead at this point.  Sometimes the nap is 1.5 hours sometimes 4 hours.

  • We feed on demand/on cue so we let the baby sleep as long as he needs to. He sleeps for 3 hour stretches at night and 1.5-3 during the day (lately it's been closer to 2.5 rather than 3) He has gained enough weight back from what he lost after birth so we don't need to wake him to feed and so far it's worked for us so that's what we do :)

If a nap goes more than 2.5 hours or so, I try to "organically" help her wake up by making a bit more noise. It takes her a long time to fully wake up from a long nap, and I find if I rush it, she's a bit of a mess. On the other hand, a really long nap does seem to cut down on her nighttime sleep. FWIW, she slept 9.5 hours STRAIGHT last night!

  • I'd let LO sleep...their little bodies grow so much in so little time and most of that growth takes place during sleep.  I've had DD sleep for 7 hours one day and it didn't effect her nighttime sleep at all and she STTN.

  • Thanks for the tips!  I am letting her sleep as I write and will not wake her and see how she does.  :)
