Baby Showers

Duplicate gift thank you?

At my shower yesterday I received 3 exactly the same bouncers.  It was the one I had registered for, but BRU didn't remove from the registry.  Everyone knows I will have to return 2, and it became kind of a funny thing a the shower as I kept opening them.  Two of the bouncer givers came up to me afterwards to point out the gift receipts were included.  Now my question is how do word the thank you cards? Word them all like their bouncer was the only one?  Or do I mention something about receiving so many and what I got when I returned the other 2?

Re: Duplicate gift thank you?

  • I worded it as I would if I received only one. If you live in a two story place you might consider keeping two of them- one upstairs and one downstairs. It was ver convenient to have one upstairs already when I wanted to take a quick shower or put her down for just a second. Just an idea.

  • I would word it like the one you are writing it to gave you the bouncer you are keeping.  Since they are all identical no one will really know which two you took back.
  • I think you could do either option - but only cause they are aware of the situation and you already talked about it.  If you knew what you were going to get instead, you could reference it. As the gift giver, I'd be curious since we had talked about it.

Either of these will absolutely do. I like the idea of telling them what you got in exchange... Would make me feel good ad the gift giver to know what you got.

  • I would thank them for the generous gift and for helping you celebrate; focus on how their presence was the greatest of gifts and how nice it was to spend time together.

  • I received 3 of the exact same blankets from Target: 2 ppl were shopping at the same time and 1 (DH's older aunt) didn't know you had to tell them you bought off the regsitry.   Everyone joked as I opened the gifts and knew we'd return.  I wrote all 3 of the thank you's exactly the same:  Thank you so much for coming to the shower to celebrate baby K.  Also, thank you for the adorable blanket.  I can't wait to wrap baby K in it.

I don't think there is any need to go into I returned it for X.  I would actually think it's wierd if I got a thank you that said this.

  • Very tacky to write that you returned the giver's gift in the TY.
  • I agree with rhubarb... this happened to me with a wedding gift, a huge super nice Cuisinart slow cooker! I'm sure that the gift givers understand the situation and won't take it personally, but what I did was just go ahead and talk in the thank-you note about what a thougthful gift it was, how much I would enjoy it and couldn't wait to use it, as if I were going to be using THEIRS. Whether the one that I use is TECHNICALLY theirs or not, they chose this generous gift for me, and would receive happiness from imagining me using it and enjoying it. At the end of the day, it doesn't really MATTER whose gift you take back, and there's no need to tell anyone which one that is! They got you a nice gift... and they were thoughtful enough to get a gift receipt to boot!

  • Haha, this happened at the baby shower I just went to on the same day as yours. Small world. I would just write it as though the bouncer was the only one and depending on how your crowd is I would throw in a joke about how it was obviously a very popular gift.
    I love this man.
