I am a third time mother and I want to tell you a story of my first son's birth. Not to scare you, but just to be prepared that the birth can go many diferrent ways...
It was 16 and a half years ago...We were going to the birth classes. Breathing technique, take music ( tape player then
) for relaxation, blah blah. One class all the lady was talking about is how not to get panicked and not to go to the hospital right away, because they might and probably will send you back home. DOn't call the doctor in the middle of the night if your contractions are more then 4 minutes apart etc etc.
Then I woke up in the middle of the snowy Boston night. My water broke and I am literally having one contraction after another. Woke up my husband. He is getting a watch - DH:"ok, let's count the time between contractions" - 40 seconds.... Pause - "But the lady said don't bother the doctor until contractions are 4 minutes apart?" ME: " You idiot! Get dressed we are driving to the hospital!" . It was 40 minutes drive - that seemed like eternity. I had major pain and urge to push in the car. We made it to the hospital at 3:10 AM. The actual birth time recorded 3:35 AM. The doctor said it was the fastest birth she ever witnessed. I was lying there terrified post factum - I could have had my baby in the car, we almost did not make it - OMG!
Well that's all. The baby was healthy and everything ended well, but it sure did us a scare! So I guess the lesson is - be prepared to all kinds of scenarios out there ![]()
Re: Want to warn FTM of "unusual" birth scenario
Wow, that's fast. I've been reading different birth stories lately and I've read some like yours. The average first time birth is usually pretty long, but it can be fast sometimes.
It's scary that you could have given birth in the car...but in some ways, your birth story sounds nicer than some of those 36 hours of labour stories that you hear
In the end, all that matters is a healthy baby and mama.
My OB said if my water breaks I need to immediately get in the car and head on out. Do not take a shower. Do not shave my legs. Just come on in.
My first birth was 15 hours but I had an epi and it slowed things down considerably and then my nurse let me labor down for a long time after I was technically "ready" to push.
As a non FTM speaking, I really had a hard time getting over the fact that I didn't have my dream/planned birth experience. We were taking classes, hynobirthing, all kinds of great stuff. But I went 9 days over due and had 25 hours of excruciating labor only to end in a csection.
My advice to FTM's is to have an open mind if things don't go exactly as planned.
