We decided not to do the NT scan. We could never terminate the pregnancy is there was an issue and we felt it would cause more stress to know through out the rest of the pregnancy. I am sad I don't get to see our baby this month, but we are hoping to get a gender scan in June and know what we be having!

Re: Anyone NOT getting the NT scan?
Our thoughts exactly.

Yes, because everyone who does get an NT scan is ready and willing to terminate if the results are less than perfect. Insert rolling eyes icon. I get it that some people don't want to do it - but to make it seem like the ONLY reason to get it done is because you would terminate is very judgmental of the people who do get the NT scan done. This keeps coming up over and over. Doing an NT scan is NOT just for termination. Also, if you're so anti finding out more information (b/c obviously information = termination) then why do any of the tests? Don't do the A/S either because you wouldn't terminate, right? Sorry but this is just enough - we have seen so many posts about the NT scan. Each person should do what they feel comfortable with, but those not getting it done shouldn't really assume that the only reason to get one done is to decide to terminate if something were wrong.

Thank you! This is a non invasive test which gives knowledge to the parents. I was one of those people who was given a not so favorable result with DD1 and still I chose to have the test done with DD2 and now with this LO. Why? Because knowledge is power. To put it out there - I would not terminate for trisomy 21. That is not why I have the test. I have the test so in case the baby does have trisomy 21, we can start to prepare for it. Even more than that, I have the test to see if the baby has a fatal condition. There are conditions a baby could have which are so detrimental that a baby will not survive birth and may not even survive the rest of the pregnancy. An ultrasound at 12 weeks can show some of these conditions.
My husband and I decided against it. Not because we would or wouldn't terminate, just because we didn't feel like it was necessary for our situation. I think it is a personal decision, one in which no judgement should be passed. There are many reasons to have the scan, or not have the scan. But every situation, and every pregnancy are so different. So in my opinion, to automatically assume that the reason for getting the scan is because you would terminate if something came up wrong, is a judgement that just isn't fair....

The NT scan is a risk measurement test and not diagnostic, so I'm not sure what 'false positive' means in that context. But when we got ours done with the baby I'm pregnant with now they saw some things that were concerning. We opted to take the 1/400 risk of m/c and have a CVS done and we learned that our baby has Down Syndrome. I fell down, I cried, I was totally devastated for weeks. And then I started learning stuff about it to prepare myself. And more importantly, my doctors know that I'm 'high risk' and that I need to be closely monitored so they can keep my baby healthy and make sure that if she needs any help when she's born we'll be prepared for that. Also? At this point I'm very excited to meet my baby. I already mourned, I'm ok now. I would hate to have been in that mourning period when my baby had just arrived.
Just something to consider.

I don't necessarily think that those saying they aren't getting the scan done because they wouldn't terminate are passing judgement on those that do get the scan done. It might be that for them, that's the most important reason in their minds they decided against it, but that doesn't necessarily have anything to do with the reasons behind others decisions. I think sometimes people take things too personally that were never really meant that way in the first place.
We decided against it because I don't feel that it is all that necessary, I wouldn't want to do further testing, and it would not change how we proceed with the pregnancy. Also, despite how fun it is to get to see the baby, I prefer to limit the exposure to ultrasound, as it's not known for sure that it's 100% without side effects to the baby. We will do the a/s at 20 weeks because I think it would be hard to go through the whole pregnancy without having any ultrasounds, and also, we hope to find out the gender. To each their own.
This is pretty much us too, except this is our first.
This times 100. People are so thin skinned now a days.
Everyone that expressed their opinions here had more reason than that they would not terminate the pregnancy. No one said that they felt that was the only reason they would get the NT scan. I have not seem any judgement here except these posts. I was wanting to talk to others to see how they felt about missing the opportunity to see their baby since they decided not to have this sonogram. I am disappointed about missing the chance to see the baby, but we decided not to have the scan because of the stress that it could cause. We decided to trust our baby is fine and that if not we can handle it when the baby gets here.
Ditto!
We chose to get it done after we already had one perfectly healthy baby boy our numbers with my first son were 1 in 20,000 just 3 years ago. We are 21 and 29 both very healthy no past history in our families. Yeah, our ultra sound measured above the range and we are now 1 in less than 300.
Im not saying this is the case for everyone but there could be complications with the pregnancy and be life threatening for your baby or you If something goes undetected and this is coming from my dr. We chose to have the CVS done and the fetal echo test later on. It's a whirlwind but I'd like to be educated if there is something wrong
Amen to that!! We had an NT scan with Owen and we had one with this LO too. I much rather know if there were any health issues with LO so we can prepare and educate ourselves,an NT scan is NOT done to decide if you will terminate it's for knowledge. I'm assuming those not getting the NT scan are also not getting the AS as well right? The AS can determine problems as well.
