Dr prescribed PolyViSol- anyone else?

We went in for Lexi's 2 week check up yesterday and her doctor prescribed PolyViSol (a multivitamin) and said it was because she is EBF. I remember the same thing being prescribed to DS1 who was FF. I remember having the hardest time getting him to take it. My thinking was, if breastfeeding is best, and women have been doing it since the beginning of time, what's the need for a multivitamin? She's not jaundiced at all anymore, all her blood tests came back perfect, she BFs like a pro and is gaining weight really well. I didn't think to ask the doctor why it was necessary, but was wondering if anyone else is giving it their LO.

Re: Dr prescribed PolyViSol- anyone else?

  • It was prescribed to my DS, but I am using Carlson Vit D drops instead. Vit D isn't readily passed through breast milk, but I have a good diet and am taking my prenatals so don't see a need for the rest of the supplements.

  • Yes. It is a newer recommendation (the past few years) for breastfed infants. Primarily for iron and vitamin D. Apparently they do not get iron in breast milk,

We were told to use Vitamin D drops because we are EBF too. Apparently because infants don't get enough sunlight and breast milk doesn't have enough D in it, it's necessary. I got D Vi Sol and gave that to her a couple of times, but it seemed way too nasty and chemically to me. On the Breastfeeding board, I heard about Carlson D drops. It's just a tiny drop and doesn't smell funky. So, I ordered them off Amazon and now we're giving her that.

  • Yep! We are EBF too and are giving Poly Vi Sol, and also D Vi Sol to him once a day.  We throw it into a tiny bottle with some BM and he drinks it. The PVS smell makes me want to ralph.  It smells terrible.  The DVS does not smell too bad though!

ALSO!!!! They are made by Enfamil - so if you call the Enfamil people and ask them, they will send you coupons for the vitamins via snail mail! :)

  • Yes. When we left the NICU they said all babies are told to take it. We were told to get it without iron though. I throw it in a bottle of BM. It's annoying that it stains though... and stinks.

  • I believe depending on where you live, the only thing you may need to give baby is vitamin d. We gave our daughter the Carlson vitamin d drops and will give this baby the same. Everything else they should be getting in breastmilk,

  • I actually just got back from the drug store picking it up.  Our doc recommended TriViSol...which is very similar, but has a few less vitamins in it.  TriViSol has A, C, and D which are not transmitted through breastmilk.  Our doc say PolyViSol is fine, but it has extra nutrients that infants will just pee/poop out so she said start with TriViSol.

Not looking forward to trying it...it does say on the box you can mix it with formula, so we might try it in a breastmilk bottle from pumped milk if the eye dropper doesn't go well...

    good luck!

  • Thanks ladies! I'm going to see about sending off for some coupons, but will definitely try some of the others that were recommended. I remember when I had to give them to one of my boys, and had to mix it in a bottle. LO hasn't taken a bottle yet, so I'll try one of the other ones. I have a great pharmacist, so I'll see what she recommends that won't be so nasty.

  • My doctor said that we could wait until she is 2 months old to give it to her. We always sucked at giving it to DS. We would forget. I don't even know if I will even buy any this time.

  • Our pedi told us to use it with both kids.
