Nipples too big... Is it possible?

DD does not have a very good latch, but I will admit it is might fault for not practicing with her... I am almost exclusively pumping at this point.  However I do try a few times a day to get her to latch and she will try, but spits out my nipple shortly after. I honestly think my nipple might be too wide for her... When she opens her mouth I can barely stuff it in there, and when she sucks she only gets the nipple and no areola which hurts.  Is this a common problem or do we just need to work on it more?  Thinking about calling a LC but DH thinks its just an anatomy issue and an LC won't be able to help.  I really hope to get back to nursing and not just pumping all the time.  When we use a nipple shield it helps because it co,presses everything to a more tubular shape.

Re: Nipples too big... Is it possible?

  • I had/have that same issue. I am almost only exclusive pumping also. While in the hospital the LC gave me nipple shields by Medela. They are a life saver!! She latches on but can get a little frustrated since he has to work a little harder to get milk out. I usually put it on and wait for a little milk to show in the nipple shield then place her on, which helps her.  Try nipple shields and good luck!

Even if it's an anatomy issue, an LC should help you work with it.
