Official Beta and WTF

My FET is an official failure.  It's okay, I'm taking it all on out on my poor husband.  I would punch me in the face if I were him.  He's a good sport.

I also had my WTF today.  Very fast, when I called to make an appointment, there was a cancellation so I got in right away.  My RE thinks there is absolutely no reason for my fails.  She says I'm producing a good amount of great quality embies and at this point it's just a numbers game and I'm falling on the crappy side of the statistics.  She recommends giving it another shot without changing protocols (or I can do a short protocol if I choose, she's okay with both) and doesn't recommend any additional testing.  She said if I was having recurrent implantation and then losing it, it would be a different story, but since I'm not having that problem, we just need to get "lucky".  I'm not sure how I feel about that.  Do you guys have any comments?

Re: Official Beta and WTF

  • Sorry B.  Not the news anyone deserves to hear.  I look forward to seeing what others have to say because my clinic basically says the same thing...I just need to get "lucky".  If I were a gambler who enjoyed tossing tens of thousands of dollars down on black that would be enticing, but I am not and I prefer more than "luck".

  • Oh Bee Bee. I'm so sorry.  It's just not fair.

As for it being a numbers game, I thikn there is some truth to that.  I have done the same protocol for all 4 IVFs with varying degrees of response and success.  After my 3rd IVF on the same protocol, I went for a second opinion with another guy who said that my current RE was doing it all worng, should change this and that, etc.  I went baclk to my current RE and told him what the other RE said and he said that the other RE was doing it all wrong, etc.

In the end, I stayed with my old RE and did the same protocol with the worst response ever and have this LO cooking now.  As much as we all know about this process from having to go through so much, I think you have to reach a point and just listen to your RE, go through the motions and hope that you end up on the good side of the numbers sooner rather than later.

I have found this to be a very expensive trial and error process, not to mention emotionally unbearable.  That being said she is probably right to some degree.  I don't think it ever hurts to get a second opinion.

I do believe it's a numbers/luck game.  And it sucks.  It's a very expensive gamble and sometimes there is absolutley no reason why a cycle has failed.  It's so completley unfair.

  • I am so sorry.  I remember feeling the exact same way that you do know after our first FET failed.  We were in the same boat, nothing "caused" the BFN, it just didn't work.  It is so frustrating and disappointing, and there isn't a reason it didn't work.

For me, this is when I sought a second opinion.  I had some other issues with my original clinic that I was not happy about anyway, and this was a good point for me to seek a second opinion.  We ended up switching clinics, and in my case, I responded better to a different protocol, and creating better quality embryos at the new clinic.  We were successful on IVF fresh cycle #2.

It never hurts to get a second opinion, but I do believe that it is a combination of trial and error and luck all mixed in there.  Hang in there. ((hugs))

  • I'm so sorry.  When we first started going down the IVF path, my RE said to me (and I'm guessing these are stats based on their success rates) that 80% of couples will conceive within three IVF cycles - so that I should prepare that it could take up to 3+ rounds.  I don't know how accurate that is in the real world outside of my clinic, but it makes me think there may be some truth to the comment about odds.

I'd probably get a 2nd opinion, just for my own piece of mind.

  • It's very much luck. I did one fresh and three frozen cycles and discarded 6 abnormal embryoes in addition to that. I could easily have done 3 frozen cycles with those 6 had I not done pgd. So you could even look at is as one fresh and 6 frozen cycles. Just to get a baby.
  • Oh Bee, I'm so sorry. I can see both sides to this, yes, there is some amount of "luck" involved for sure, I agree with the PP that said it's a really expensive trial and error process. I had very little hope for my own second cycle at the beginning as well too, because really if it didn't work the first time, why would it the second. The difference is that I felt confident in my RE and that he felt he knew me and my body better and indicated some things that made me a different responder than he expected and what he wanted to try and do the second time, so my RE really was my second opinion I guess. For this reason, I would suggest a second opinion before you decide anything. You have to feel good about the process and feel good about getting hopeful. It's entirely possible you're just not there yet, but if sounds like you're really not getting the answers from your RE that you want to even get you there so I would suggest at least talking to someone else.

In terms of doing the same protocol, it seems to make sense. But that doesn't mean you shouldn't get a 2nd opinion. I would get that 2nd opinion, if for nothing else just peace of mind then decide if you want to change anything or not.

Oh no, B!  I am sooo sorry.  I'm glad you were able to get in to the RE so quickly.  I also agree that it is a numbers game - too bad we couldn't use our odds to hit the lottery!!  I know this entire process is emotionally and financially draining but I would try a second opinion.  It certainly wouldn't hurt.

I'm so sorry, Bee!  We had a similar explanation from our RE after IVF#1 failed.  He said that it's a numbers game and that we were just having "bad luck."  It totally sucks hearing that.  However, we did end up with better luck on round 2.  Huge hugs!

  • So sorry you're going through all of this again.

I think it's really tough to continually hear that things look great and still be an outlier while so many others get pregnant.

The only thing I could think of is the e.tegrity test to see if your lining attracts the embryos. I'm not sure how good is it, but we're thinking about having it done if our FET doesn't take, because that would mean 5 blasts lost and only c/p. It's not cheap, but what in IF world is?

Hopefully your luck will strike soon so you don't have to do this again. It's hard to be taken seriously when you're not having losses, although I know having a loss isn't an easy thing to go through either. The cards are stacked if you don't even have the opportunity to find out if you are at risk for miscarriage on top of the difficulty of getting pregnant.

Wishing you and your DH the best while you go through this difficult time.
