Pregnant after a Loss

Protein S deficiency?

So my OB just called with this diagnosis. All I really know is that it is a clotting disorder. I know many of you ladies have other clotting issues... any insight into this would be helpful! He said the nurse would call me back with a referral to a hematologist, until then, I'm alone with my thoughts!

Re: Protein S deficiency?

  • I got diagnosed with this last Novemeber right before I found out I was pregnant. The hematologist put me on extra Folic Acid and a baby aspirin and then when I got pregnant my OB put me on progesterone suppositories until 12 weeks. I was also referred to a MFM Specialist and he has kept me on everything because obviously it's not hurting any. They aren't sure if this is what caused my early losses but I like to think that my little cocktail they have me on has helped me get so far with this pregnancy.

I hope the hematologist is able to ease your mind and I look forward to your update. I'm also sending good vibes your way!

  • When did you have the bloodwork done?

I was diagnosed with a Protein S deficiency after I developed a blood clot soon after the birth of my daughter.  I saw a mfm for advice on how to handle that should I become pregnant again.  She advised Lovenox while pregnant, compression stockings and to be more mindful of getting up to walk around every half hour to an hour, etc.  She said there was an increased risk of me developing more clots whether pregnant or not and that the risk to the baby was mainly late term complications, not things early on in pregnancy.

The reason why I asked when you were tested is that protein s is naturally decreased while you are pregnant and for some time after pregnancy.  So, if you are tested while pregnant or say soon after a miscarriage or delivery, the results may not be 100% accurate.  After my miscarriages I saw a hematologist and was retested with normal levels of protein s and then I was tested once more just to be sure and yep, normal levels again.  I believe I was tested too soon after the birth of my daughter and that scewed the results.

Kelly, Mom to Christopher Shannon 9.27.06, Catherine Quinn 2.24.09, Trey Barton lost on 12.28.09, Therese Barton lost on 6.10.10, Joseph Sullivan 7.23.11, and our latest, Victoria Maren 11.15.12

Secondary infertility success with IVF, then two losses, one at 14 weeks and one at 10 weeks, then success with IUI and then just pure, crazy luck.  Expecting our fifth in May as the result of a FET.

    Thanks, ladies!

I was tested last week, the doc did explain that levels drop in pregnancy, but that my levels were well below even the lowered pregnancy norms. I'm hoping that's the case though, that it's not a chronic condition. In any case I guess I'm interested in what a hematologist will say!

I have it along with some other things I'm on lovenox, baby aspirin and extra folic acid. I have to be on ba the rest of my life and I will switch to heparin shots at 36 weeks.
