Pregnant after a Loss

Exercise Ball for Office Chair?

I've been thinking lately about purchasing an exercise ball to replace my desk chair at work. My co-worker did this and I tried hers out for a while. It really helped my posture and made my back feel better. My only concern would be that the occasional bouncing would be bad for baby.

Have you heard anything bad about pregnant women using these as desk chairs?

  • My OB actually suggested it to help relieve stiffness/sore lower back issues.  I haven't done it only because i'm super short so finding a Ball tall enough that i can type propperly but still reach the floor is difficult for me.

  • Totally will be no problem for baby, your baby is well protected from a little bouncing.  Sitting on the ball would be no worse than driving in your car over a bumpy road and you probably don't give that a second thought.  For the record an excercise ball is essentially a birthing ball.  It's great if you have 3rd tri tailbone issues.  I'd use one, but my desk is too high/I'm too short for my workspace and my body to align correctly if I sat on a ball.

  • I am super short too (4'11.5)! I actually found a ball with a base and wheels on amazon for around $80. I'm just not 100% sure I'm going to be absolutely dedicated to it to spend that kind of money on it.

I'm totally picturing myself rolling around and falling off.  I didn't know they made ones with a base and wheels!  Interesting.

This totally reminds me of an episode of 'the Office' where Dwight brought one in as his office chair. Jim ended up poking a hole through it with scissors. It was a pretty funny skit. I would probably still use my regular chair and use the ball for 15 minute periods.

  • Bouncing on a ball like that is in no way bad for baby, it's pretty much a birthing ball.  I use one a work most of the day to alleviate tailbone pain.

  • I was thinking about this the other day.  I think I'm totally going to get one.  My butt kills me by the end of the day and I think it'll help with my posture.  My opinion: It's a great idea!

  • I used one at home all the time during the last couple weeks before DD was born. She was so low, I was so uncomfortable, it's the only thing that helped. But I wouldn't *replace* your office chair -- I think you're going to want a regular chair with a back sometimes, too. If you can fit both in your office, I'd go for it. I got tired sitting up straight and holding myself on the ball, so trading off with a regular chair was key (just have extra lumbar support available -- I used big fat books stuck between my back and the chair, and it felt so good!).

I have this problem, and the counter I work at is so tall that I can't find that will remotely fit my needs.

  • I sit on a ball at my desk at home and actually a little slow bouncing is great for your back, my physical therapist has me do that to help get fluid in between the vertebrae!  You can swivel your hips in circles while sitting there too and it will lubricate your hip joints and lower back.  I highly recommend the ball over sitting at an office chair!  It's been a life saver for me!

I have a similar ball with a base in my office. My mom bought it for me because of the long hours I work my lower back would get really sore. It definitely helps and the one I bought you could purchase based on your height (the size of the ball varied).

However, if anyone is trying to work their core muscles, the ball with the base doesn't do that. It only relieves the pressure off your lower back and helps your posture.

  • I did get an exercise ball and used it in my office as my chair during my first pregnancy. I think my co-workers thought I was crazy, but I didn't care b/c it really helped me be more comfortable during the day!
