Should I bother with a diaper genie?

Hello everyone! I am just looking for some advice from some experienced Mommies :) I am currently 22 weeks pregnant and my DH and I are about to create our registry. What are your thoughts on the diaper genie? Should we stick with scented bags/plastic bags? TIA!

Re: Should I bother with a diaper genie?

  • I read a bunch of stuff when we were registering and a lot of people seemed to think they didn't work well or were silly and unnecessary. We ended up getting one and I am really glad. We have a two story house and have to go all the way outside and around the garage to get to the garbage cans so we love only having to take the diapers out once a week or so. Of course we will see if it still works well at keeping the smell down once it gets really hot! If I had it to do over again I would get the elite with the foot pedal, I didn't realize the difference but my SIL has that one and it is way better b/c when you press the pedal it opens up the inside so you don't have to jam the diaper down in and risk getting your hands all icky.

     Good luck!

  • Get the Arm & Hammer one. It is fantastic. Trust me, you won't want to take out a poopy diaper every time it happens. We have a regular step trash can with a lid for pee diapers and use the A&H for poopy diapers only to save the bags.

This. The arm and hammer one is great. You can only smell anything when you open everything to take it out. We only use ours for poopy diapers too, and only have to change it every week or so. At about $3.00 a month to maintain, and I think $20.00 to buy to begin with, it's totally worth it.
  • We are probably in the minority, but we didn't end up liking the diaper genie. We ended up using the plastic grocery store bags....put the diaper in the bag, tied it off, and tossed it in the garbage.

  • We got a regular trash can for her room that we use the Febreze scented Glad trash bags and got the scented BRU brand disposable diaper bags and have NEVER had an issue.  I even sometimes forget to move them out of the diaper changing station of the PnP and you would never know. Probably not the most environmentally friendly but it works for us.

  • We are in the process of switching to cloth diapers, but with disposables I highly recommend the Diaper Genie! We only use it for poopy diapers. Wet diapers just go in a trash can. We haven't had any problem with the smell and the DG refills last a long time.

This is the one we have and it's fabulous! Uses regular trash bags and you can't smell anything except when you take the whole trash part out. Way cheaper and just as good!

  • I got the Munchkin arm & hammer diaper pail instead of the genie, but it works for us.  Do you plan to breastfeed? Breast milk poop isn't that stinky so for a while we didn't even use a diaper pail just put diapers in the trash.  I got a pail when I got tired of te trash filling up so quick and knew that I would want it for smell control when we start solids.

  • We cloth diaper and use cloth wipes so I didn't think we'd use the one we got. However, my DH likes to use regular wipes and we use disposables at night, so we use it for that. I like it because there's NO SMELL and we don't empty it but maybe once every two or three weeks because of how little we use it. GL!

We didn't have one at first and my dad bought us the arm & hammer one for christmas, WHAT A DIFFERENCE! I love it and it is so easy my DH can use it too. The genie seems a little more complicated to change, maybe not I dont know but I love my A & H!

This exactly. We take out the bag after there are a few diapers in there, but before it gets too smelly.

we have the diaper genie elite with the foot pedal, and we love it. We only use it for poop diapers, as pee diapers just go in the kitchen garbage. We don't have to change the cartidge thingy too often, and it works great - no smell at all, and we FF. Def worth the $.

  • We had one for my first son and it did not work AT ALL!  His room wreaked!  We ended up getting a safety first diaper pail this time around and it works SO much better!

  • Us, too.  With my first, we had a diaper genie, or it's equivalent, and my whole house stunk.  We gave it to Goodwill pretty quickly and did the plastic grocery bag thing.  Plus, I take the trash out pretty regularly anyway (every couple days, or so- I like getting the extra steps on my pedometer), so that definitely kept the smell down.
