Natural Birth

Those planning to use a birthing center..

What did you wear during labor? I'm a ftm and I know the ease of a hospital gown but pretty sure they don't supply anything at a birthing center. Plus I was hoping to labor in the tub for a little bit so I know it will be a sports bra then. I am more of a conservative girl so the thought of walking around in nothing but a bra doesn't work for me.

Suggestions?

Re: Those planning to use a birthing center..

  • When I had DS I labored in my own nursing nightgown with housecoat. But when I got in the birth tub I was totally naked, and didn't think twice about it. I think wet fabric on my skin would have been more annoying to me, and since I delivered in the tub I wanted immediate skin to skin.

  • In the moment most likely you won't care. I packed all kinds of stuff...multiple bathing suits, sports bras, sundresses, skirts. I was naked almost immediately after walking in the door.

  • I am thinking about this, too. For DS, in the hospital I labored in the tub in a swimsuit top but then it got cold because it was wet, albiet that was not a real birthing tub where it is deep. After that, in the water I went bare or wore a hospital gown and just got that wet.  Out of the water I wore a hospital gown or a loose, soft long dress. For this PG at a BC I'll have to bring stuff plus we are having a photographer and in exchange for free pics our photos will go on her website and portfolio so being modest (and comfortable) is a must for me. I am planning on bringing lots of tank tops and some swim tops but going bare-bottomed in the water. For out of the water, I am bringing some comfy skirts.

    This Yes

I will bring bikini top for the tub and a couple of zip up robes. I used them first time after delivery, they are easy for exam and easy for b/f

  • I agree with those who say you won't care. Everyone told me the same when I was pregnant with #1 and I didn't believe them- I am not a "naked" person. I do not change or shower in women's changerooms, etc. However, I spent most of my labour with DS1 naked, and only bothered to put on the hospital gown when a nurse came and draped it over me when I got out of the shower. With DS2 I had a homebirth/waterbirth. I wore a sportsbra, but only because it was what I was wearing when I went into labour. I was naked from the waist down the entire time the midwives were there. I did not think about it once in either labour.

  • They had gowns but I labored in a shirt only with my first as I labored while lying on my side covered by a blanket, I was exhausted before I went into labor and I slept between each contraction.

With the second I labored in a bikini, black knit capri's and sleeveless t. Just what ever is comfy and either is to dark to stain or you don't care if it does stain.

Just don't forget to wear a pad as you will bleed some during labor.

*edited to add that during my first labor my dad and brother were there during my labor though not during delivery, so I was very conscious of my modesty, Most people aren't true, I was.   During my second labor the only reason I was clothed during labor was because I spent 3/4 of my labor in the car, the rest was either dressing to leave, or undressing the moment we arrived because I was pushing. I would have been naked in the water had I labored at the maternity center.

  • I got a bra that is similar to a sports bra but with hook/eye closures in the back so that I don't have to take it off over my head.  I will probably end up naked though.  I'm looking for a good nursing nightgown for post-partum right now...

  • The thought of parading around or bathing in the nude in front of your midwife/doula/nurse is odd when you're not in labor, 7 cm dilated, etc. :) Your focus changes. However, if they don't provide anything, I'd get a tear-away gown online.

  • I went to my center wearing a skirt with a shirt over top.  I don't think I had a bra on.  I don't remember.  When I got in the tub, I took it all off.  It was just easier and more comfortable.  At some point we used the pump for nipple stimulation to help with contractions, so I would have to have been topless for that.

I "packed" a nursing bra, a bikini top, and a robe.  I ended up getting naked almost as soon as I walked in the door of the birth center.
