Bumbo

Do you ladies like your bumbos? How old was your LO when you started putting them in it? Isaac is 6 weeks and is pretty good at holding his head. I'm thinking of buying one but am not sure yet.. What do you do if  they start getting tired? Isaac is strong and con hold it up for a while during tummy time but I'm not sure about while sitting. And after a while he will get tired which will worry me if he looses control. Thanks!

Re: Bumbo

  • If you think your lo is ready for it, then he probably is.  Just like with tummy time, start slow with just a few minutes at a time.  When he seems upset or seems like he can't hold himself up, take him out.  Slowly he'll gain strength and be able to stay in for longer periods.  It does seem a little early to me, but all babies grow at different rates.  Give it a try and if it doesn't go well, put it away and bring it back out in a few weeks.

I just looked through my photos and we put DD in it at 2 months, so now might be about right!  After some practice, she eventually loved it and used it for several months

  • I just started putting her in it last week.  FIgured I would give it a shot since she can hold her head well.  She liked it for a little bit.

  • I think the recommended age for the bumbo/bebe pod is 3 months if I remember correctly. Six weeks seems a little early to me. I think we put DD1 & 2 in it around 2.5 months for a little bit at a time. DS has great head control but will just be turning 2 months this week so I'm going to hold off for another couple weeks yet.

And yes, both of my girls loved it and I really liked that it was a way for them to start to sit up and get a different perspective rather than lying down flat or at an incline. I know some people think they're useless but I really liked using it!

  • I think DS1 used it like twice. I was going to pull it out in another month or so and see if DS2 likes it more. It would make it nice to be able to play with DS1 while DS2 sits in there and watches us for a bit. We will see if that works out. Stick out tongue

Instead of a bumbo, I'd buy the summer infant super seat.  It is MUCH more versatile- it can be strapped to a chair, comes with a play tray, and we used it as a booster seat for DS when he was done with the high chair.  We also took it with us when we were working on eating and would be out during meal time, and on vacation when DS was 11 mos and we were staying in a beach house.

That said, DS was 5 weeks when he was sitting in his seat.  He loved it!

  • We haven't put DD in ours yet.  A friend of mine started using hers when her DD was 8 weeks.  My 18 month niece loved it when she was over.  She kept sitting it.  So, I guess some kids like it even when they are older.

  • We use the Bumbo for meal times right now.  DDs thighs outgrew the Bumbo by the time she was 4 months but she could sit up (if you set her up) for 20+ min by 4 1/2 months.  Funny thing is that now that it's back out for DS she sites in it again all the time.

The pic in my siggy was taken at 8 weeks.

  • Thanks ladies! I like that summer infant thing! Looks nice and then he will have something to do when he sits in it! Maybe I'll do that instead!

This looks so cool!  If we didn't already have the bumbo, I would totally get this!
