1st Trimester

Vomiting and diarrhea [TMI]

Last night before bed, I started feeling rather nauseated and had lots of "rumbling" in my stomach/intestines. I went to bed early but was soon up running to the bathroom. I vomited hard-core five or six times, took a shower, got back in bed...rinse and repeat 5 times over the night. I finally also started letting go of some major diarrhea.

Made my husband run to 7-11 to get me some ginger ale because I was dying of thirst and it was the only thing I felt I could drink. Once I had that to sip on, I stopped vomiting, but this morning, I still feel queasy.

At one point I was so cold that I had one my thick bathrobe, a sheet, two blankets, and a comforter, so I assume I probably had a light fever.

I am wondering if I have somehow managed to contract listeria...I guess I will see if this clears up and is just a stomach bug, but I can't help but worry.

  • You poor thing!  I think the general rule is food poisoning comes on quickly - generally within an hour of eating whatever causes it.  In the meantime, make sure you drink gatorade or pedialyte or something to keep your electrolytes up since you're losing fluids.  Hope you feel better soon!

  • A lot of food poisoning takes about eight hours to affect you

  • According to this site it takes a couple of days for the symptoms to show after you contact it. Here's the site link, I thought it was pretty informative.

If you have a fever, I would call your drs office today-if they have some kind of an emergency exchange for nights and weekends-and see if they are concerned about it. Hope you feel better soon!

  • Thanks, ladies. I think I have a fever but have no thermometer because we just moved to a new area and a lot of stuff is still packed up. I also haven't seen my OB for the first time yet (although I do have an appt scheduled with one for a few weeks from now). To top it off, my husband HAD to go to work today for a big PR event he is coordinating, so i am stuck at home with no one to call to help me care for my active 13-month-old.

    Ranting. Meh.

I will see if I can call the doc's answering service. I am really concerned about the little one in there at this point.

  • If you are running a temp, it could be a stomach virus...but, I have had diarrhea, along with nausea and only very occasional vomitting, has been my main m/s symptom since the beginning of this pregnancy. I hate to say it, but this could just be m/s starting and this is how your body is reacting.

  • When I had that last pregnancy I ended up going to the ER because I needed fluids and I turned out I had caught some nasty bug going around town (apparently was patient #30 that weekend ).  Just watch out for dehydration and if you can't keep fluids down, call your dr (even your reg dr if you haven't been to the OB) and they might refer you out to get an IV drip. That one bag of saline+potassium made me feel so much better.

  • Definitely sounds like food poisoning or the flu.  Just watch your fluids, like PP said.  If you're holding liquids down, you should be constantly sipping something like Gatorade or Pediasure.  Don't take chances if you think you may be dehydrated.  Hope you feel better!
