Toddlers: 24 Months+

Does your LO still drink from a sippy cup?

A post below got me thinking.  We still give LO a take and toss sippy cup all the time - at home, out for dinner, etc.   Mostly because he'll spill it otherwise- not because he can't drink out of a regular cup.

Anyone else?  Is there a typical age when this should be stopped?  I saw people posting about daycares not allowing them but LO stays with my MIL so I'm out of the loop!

Thanks!

  • DS drinks out of a regular cup at meal/snack times, but he still uses a sippy for his milk first thing in the morning and when he is on the move. Not sure when we will phase them out, though I plan to ask  his dentist at the next appt. Most likely we'll just switch the few he uses to straw cups.

  • Do the ones with straws count?  We used those for milk up until about a couple months ago.  Then DD got into Disney princesses and wanted to only use her princess straws.  So we've been using the take and toss cups or regular ones.

  • DD will be 4 in June & she still uses the straw cups at bed time or if she wants a drink outside the kitchen. But no she doesn't use a "sippy" cup.

I think that as soon as you can try to get them off the sippy cup. Something to do with their teeth & bite can be affected by it. You could try a toddler sport bottle withhe soft nipple type top. DD used those for a long time after getting off the bottle.

Here is what I'm talking about.

  • DD is almost 4 and DS just turned 2....they both still drink out of sippies (mostly the straw type).  If they are playing its just easier to have their drinks in covered cups.  I havent given DS a cup w/o a lid yet.  DD can drink w/o a lid but the spill-factor is at play with DS around.

  • We have been using open cups for months but most of the time she wants a straw in the cup, although she does sometimes drink without it.  When I go to other people?s houses I take a closed cup.

  • My #1 still uses a straw take and toss around the house, but an open cup if we're sitting down at the table. It's just easier to not worry about the cup being knocked over. Also with having a younger sibling around, it's impossible for #1 to have an open cup around the house. The younger one will grab it every time.

  • DS wasn't really into sippies.  Now he only uses straw or regular

  • DS drinks out of all types of cups these days!  At home, we usually give him an open cup.  If we're going somewhere in the car, though, and I think he'll want a drink, we usually take a sippy cup.  Too much room for a spill!  I don't trust myself w/ a totally open cup in the car.

  • If my son is sitting at the table, he gets a regular cup.  He does spill it sometimes, but I don't care since it's just the table and tile floor.  If he's anywhere else in the house, in the car, mall, etc. he gets a straw sippy.

  • DD still uses a sippy at home at 2.5. She can absolutely drink from a regular cup, and has been at school since 18 months, but I'm not interested in the mess. And she would spill it just playing around. Our dining room has carpet and I spend enough time scrubbing food out, I don't want to deal with milk yet. I figure since we know she can drink out of a regular cup it's not a big deal to keep her in a sippy.

  • DS, 4 years old, used a sippy after he turned 2, but once his speech delay was diagnosed they strongly recommended we drop the sippy for open mouth cups, or at least a straw cup. I think we switched to straw cups first, and then transitioned to open mouth cups.

WIth DD we switched to open mouth cups really early. She turned 2 in January and I dont actually remember the last time she used a sippy/straw cup. She's perfectly fine with an open cup. Of course there are exceptions sometimes, but both LOs use open cups almost exclusively, no matter where we are.

With regards to spills, we just don't let them walk around with their cup. If they want a drink they can sit at the table, stand near the sink, or at the coffee table. And I don't give them much at a time. Sometimes they spill, but they're kids, so it's expected on occasion (we also make them get a towel and clean up the spill on their own).

  • Ds uses all sorts of cups, but if we want to avoid a mess in the car or when he's walking around, we will usually use a regular straw in a cup.

You should see the little cups they use in daycare.  It is the cutest thing ever!  At snack time or mealtime, they use these little plastic cups that look like real glasses and all the little kids sit around the table and use them.  They look like little adults.

  • we are starting to use regulanr cups. ds doesnt like the sippy cups with a straw but will use a straw in a glass.  getting him to use a vup has been a nightmare. he wants to share with the dogs which means they end up'covered in milk or juice or water.

  • We still use sippies :(   My son spills like crazy... all over himself..  though after reading all these posts, I"m wondering if I should just let him figure it out?

  • When he isn't sitting at a table he uses a sippy. I don't want to deal with spills. I'd say he spills from a regular cup about 75% of the time (when he steals our drinks off the counter). I would hope in a year he could be sippy free.

  • DD has never used a sippy cup, she would only take a straw cup, and we are still using them.  Because she can't for the life of her figure out a regular cup :).  I'm waiting until it is warmer out, and then we will start having snack outside, and practice with regular cups where I don't care about spills as much.  Once she gets the hang of it I'll take the straw cups away because those can be a blitch to wash.
  • My LO still drinks from a sippy and the straw cups. She's starting to learn how to drink out of a regular cup but only when she's sitting in her highchair because she tends to spill it all over the floor. :)

  • my DS is 3 and he still drinks from a sippy.  He can drink from a regular cup, but he prefers his sippy cups and that's fine by me.   That means if he drops the cup, I won't be cleaning up milk or juice or water.
