Spelling

Matthew or Mathieu

Mathieu is the French spelling of the name. We do eventually plan on moving either to Quebec or France one day so it would work. DF is French and he really wants to incorporate his side into the name.

But, I dont want to seem like we are annihilating the name!

ETA: I am Canadian so we do have a lot of French speakers here.

Re: Spelling

  • Well, being American, Matthew is my preference.  But - spelling it the French way isn't annihilating the name.  You aren't making up the name and randomly replacing certain letters w/ "y's" or what have you.

  • I am all for incorporating family heritage into a name (notice the spelling of my sons name - not the "traditional" choice, but it is the Irish spelling).

  • I like the French spelling, especially with your DF's heritage. If I met someone with that name I would try to give it the French pronunciation rather than the English, but as long as that wouldn't bother you I say go for it.

  • I like either spelling. If you're looking to go w/ the family heritage I'd go w/ Mathieu.

  • I think given your DH's background, the fact that you live in a French-speaking area, and your intention to move to France, I'd go for the French spelling. If you were jo-shmo in the USA I'd have said Matthew for sure.

  • Being Canadian myself, I've known some Mathieu's (and I do love it!), but I'm inclined to actually pronounce it in French as well. If you're going to pronounce it the English way, I'd spell it Matthew. JMO.
