Spitting/Dribbling out milk?

My LO just turned one a few days ago, and he has started spitting his milk out all over himself! He will take a sips from his sippy cup then let it dribble out all over him. I can't get him to drink the milk! We weaned him off of the bottle a few days ago, and I don't want to have to go back to it, any suggestions? (He has been drinking milk from a sippy for about a month, but just started this dribbling thing yesturday. He still drinks water out of his other sippy without spitting or dribbling) Thank you!!

Re: Spitting/Dribbling out milk?

  • Have you tried warming it up?  E did/does the same thing when drinking milk out of a sippy cup.  Not so much when it's warm and when we "warn" her it's milk since she normally drinks water and occationally juice out of a sippy.  I think sometimes she does it out of shock that it's milk...or she could just be being a stinker.

  • My LO is doing the same thing, and has been for over a month. He does it with water and milk though, bottle and sippy, and even sometimes while nursing. He doesn't do it right away, for him I think it's more a cue that he's done drinking. I also think he just maybe likes the way it feels. I'm not really sure what to do about it, I'm hoping he'll just grow out of it. Sorry I don't have any practical advice...hopefully someone else has some, I'll be interested to read it. :)

  • since yours is new to the sippy, it's probably more experimentation right now. don't go back to the bottle.

mine has been on the sippy since 10 months old. she used to dribble quite a bit early on. she does it less now but, 9 months later, will still dribble milk/water/juice. it means she's full/done and is just playing around. i take the sippy away.

  • Yep it's just FUN!  (well, for them at least!)  I just simply say NO and take the sippy away immediatly.  They do grow out of this...eventually! :)

  • Thank you all for the advice! I'll try warming it up in a bit. Another friend of mine said that when her daughter started doing that she would mix in something for more flavor (half chocolate/strawberry milk and half regular) I'm not so sure I want him to have that extra sugar though :)
