I don't want to re-open the lunch meat debate, but I'm just curious why sliced cheese is still fine? It pretty much has the same handling and storage processes as deli meat...
Is it some potential germ that only grows in meat and doesn't in cheese?
Just pointing out that if the machines they slice meat/cheese on are not cleaned properly, you're still getting the same stuff all over your cheese. The way I feel is, no one knew all of this stuff to avoid when our parents were pregnant. My mom ate hot dogs almost every day in her pregnancy with me, and I'm here! I would just do everything in moderation since we DO know the risks.
Yesterday my dr told me it isn't the softness or hardness of cheese, but whether or not it is pasteurized. She said to be careful about where you get your cheese and that deli meat and cheese can be okay as long as you know where it comes from and whether or not it has been sitting out all day.
