Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Mamas of 11-12 month olds--- a few questions.

For those of you who are not breastfeeding, a couple questions.  For everyone--see #3.

1.  Do you give a bottle before bed?  If so, how soon before bed?  How big is the bottle and do they wet through their diaper overnight??   When do you plan on breaking the bottle before bed habit??

--We have tried transitioning out of this pattern and it's turned in to him waking up 2 times a night now----bottles BOTH times-- and wetting through at least once.   Before that, we were giving him about a 4-5 oz bottle before bed and it was a 50/50 chance of him wetting through.

2.  If your LO takes a bottle in the middle of the night--what do you plan to give them once they move to whole milk?  Will you just be giving them regular cold milk??  I'm not sure what to do with DS2--he too has a milk allergy but is on alimentum soon to be rice milk.

--We've never had to do this with DS1 because he had a milk allergy so it was breastmilk and then we moved to just water I think.

3.  Is your LO walking yet?  (just being curious---I know everyone is different)

--I was hoping he'd be walking by his birthday (or his party at least)--but not sure he will be.  He can "freeze stand" LOL--and he's trying..but not there yet.  But I couldn't be more thrilled because DS1 was very much delayed and wasn't even CRAWLING by this point...so this is exciting for us.

ETA:

4.  What time is bedtime (and wake time)?

For those of you who are not breastfeeding, a couple questions.  For everyone--see #3.

    1.  Do you give a bottle before bed?  If so, how soon before bed?  How big is the bottle and do they wet through their diaper overnight??   When do you plan on breaking the bottle before bed habit?? We still give Lydia an 8 oz bottle (a mix of  50% formula and 50% WCM) before bed. She usually finishes it, but falls asleep in the process. We intend on weaning from bottles in the next month or so. I want to make sure she is getting enough milk, water, and regular food before we completely get rid of the bottle. She's doing better, but I'm not ready to wean just quite yet.

--We have tried transitioning out of this pattern and it's turned in to him waking up 2 times a night now----bottles BOTH times-- and wetting through at least once.   Before that, we were giving him about a 4-5 oz bottle before bed and it was a 50/50 chance of him wetting through.

We stopped offering one to her (in the middle of the night), so if she does wake up, we give her the paci and rock her back to sleep. If she were inconsolable, I suppose it would be formula until we switch to WCM 100% of the time.

--We've never had to do this with DS1 because he had a milk allergy so it was breastmilk and then we moved to just water I think.

    3.  Is your LO walking yet?  No. Lydia walks along the furniture and goes from one piece of furniture to another always holding onto something. We are not pushing it.... The insanity will begin soon enough!! Our oldest didn't walk until she was 15 months old, so I'm not too concerned.

  • I breastfeed, so I am going to #3.... No, my LO is not walking. She is almost 11 months. She is not even crawling in the traditional sense (she lays on her back and pushes herself head first with her legs or rolls to get where she wants to go).... and I wouldn't say that she is "very much delayed". = ) Don't mean to sound prickley, but people are always asking "Isn't she crawling/walking yet?" and I just want to punch them and say she'll do it when she is ready. lol. She can't pull herself up to stand or anything like that yet. Some babies don't crawl at all, and some don't walk until well after a year, so he is doing well. GL and maybe he'll surprise you before his party!

  • If I was you, I'd find a better diapering solution and keep the bedtime bottle. Cut out the overnight ones 1 oz/night.

DS is walking - he just started about 2 weeks ago. It's normal to take up to 18 months, though, and I really wouldn't stress about not walking for a long time yet.

I'm sorry---when I say "delayed" --I mean he truly is "delayed"--- we didn't really know it then--- just thought he was a little behind in things--no biggie--he'll catch up -never paid attention to milestones.  But then when it got to speech and by almost 2.5 he still wasn't talking we knew something was up.  Well, he's nearing 4 yrs old and he has the vocab of maybe a 15 month old.  So I do mean he was delayed and still is.  He has speech apraxia, dyspraxia, sensory disorders and then a ton of food allergies to boot.  It's been fun--but it's made me a stronger mother and I think it's made him an awesome kid.  I love him to pieces.  I think he's going to be something very very special someday.

Asking the walking question really was more out of just being curious--I am kind of glad DS2 isn't walking yet because well...he's already a troublemaker I can tell LOL.

  • 1.  Do you give a bottle before bed?  If so, how soon before bed?  How big is the bottle and do they wet through their diaper overnight??   When do you plan on breaking the bottle before bed habit? Yes. We're giving her a 4-6 oz bottle, depending on how close to dinner her bottle is (we have dinner anywhere between 6:30-7 and sometimes she gets a little tired earlier than her usual 8pm bedtime). She doesn't wet through her overnight diaper but we have her in a size up for overnight.  We'll probably break the habit w/in the next month or two, depending on how she comes along. I'm not a huge rush though. She's already weening herself off her morning bottles oddly enough.

    2.  If your LO takes a bottle in the middle of the night--what do you plan to give them once they move to whole milk?  Will you just be giving them regular cold milk?? She doesn't take a bottle in the middle of the night.

    3.  Is your LO walking yet?  Nope. She's starting to experiment w/unassisted standing and she cruises quite comfortably but no walking.

DS gets a 6oz bottle right before bed. Sometimes he leaks, but not usually. I have no clue how to get rid of this bottle and I'm terrified!

--We have tried transitioning out of this pattern and it's turned in to him waking up 2 times a night now----bottles BOTH times-- and wetting through at least once.   Before that, we were giving him about a 4-5 oz bottle before bed and it was a 50/50 chance of him wetting through.

DS stopped eating in the middle of the night on his own at 4 months, so we got lucky on that one.

yes, DS started walking on his own at 10 months. That's early though, I wouldn't worry.

  • No she's not walking.  She mostly crawls.  She can stand unassisted for a few seconds, and she *can* cruise for a few steps, but she doesn't usually.  I think she just prefers crawling.

Bedtime and wake-up time are usually around 7.  But I've been doing a loose 2-3-4 schedule with her, so if she takes a later nap, sometimes she'll go to bed closer to 8.

  • 1. We give a 6 oz bottle before bed about half the time. It depends on how much dinner he ate, how long ago the last bottle was (sometimes he drops the pre-dinner one), and how sleepy he seems to be. He doesn't soak through.

    2. No middle of the night bottle. He doesn't wake up.

    3. Only standing and cruising. Birthday in five days.

    4. Bedtime is 8:30. Wakes on his own some time between 6:30 to 8:30.

  • 1.)  We give a bottle right before bed.  Lately she only wants about 4 oz.  Then I read her a book & put her in bed.  We are on week 3 of doing that (before she would fall asleep on me) so we hope going off the bottle will be smoother & plan to do it when she is 1.  The fact she isn't finishing bottles anymore makes me hopeful!  She hasn't peed out of her diaper since we went up a size & in night diapers.

2.)  She hasn't woke up for a middle of the night bottle since about 3 months old I believe, or around there somewhere.

3.)  She is just starting to walk by herself.  She was standing & walking along furniture for a while but never seemed interested in walking until the last week.

4.)  We usually start putting her in pj's around 7 or 7:30.  Weekday mornings we wake her up at 6-6:30, but on weekends she'll sleep til 7-7:30.

    1.  Do you give a bottle before bed?  If so, how soon before bed?  How big is the bottle and do they wet through their diaper overnight??   When do you plan on breaking the bottle before bed habit??

Yes, she still gets about 6oz before bed. She gets it right before she falls asleep. Sometimes she leaks through her diaper because she still likes to have a snack bottle in the middle of the night. I haven't even thought about breaking her bedtime bottle habit. She has JUST started going to sleep without a huge ordeal, so I don't really want to mess with it right now haha.

    2.  If your LO takes a bottle in the middle of the night--what do you plan to give them once they move to whole milk?  Will you just be giving them regular cold milk??  I'm not sure what to do with DS2--he too has a milk allergy but is on alimentum soon to be rice milk.

Same as above, I haven't really thought about it. I will probably give her some cold milk if she wants it, but by then I might try just giving her some water. I guess we will see what happens when we get to that point.

    3.  Is your LO walking yet?  (just being curious---I know everyone is different)

Yes. She has been walking since she was 10.5 months old.

    ETA:

    4.  What time is bedtime (and wake time)?

She goes to bed between 6:30-7 and usually wakes up sometime in the middle of the night but she is up for the day around 6 or 7 am. Usually closer to 6.

  • 1. Yes, we give a large bottle at bedtime.  She drinks it in her crib and falls asleep on her own.  I go up about an hour later and take the bottle.  She sleeps 12 hours straight every night, so I won't stop this habit for a while.  I know my pedi might not be happy about this, but whatever.

    2.  She never wakes at night.  Hasn't since 6 months.  When she is sick and wakes up I may give her an ounce or so.

    3.  She's been walking since 11 months, and is now running around the house.

  • 1. We give a bed time bottle. We used to just give one before he want to bed and that's it, but two weeks ago DS was sick (darrhea and then a cold) so I was giving him bottles in the middle of hte night of formula and pedialyte to make sure he aws hydrayted, and it kind of messed up his schedule and now's he's been waking for a bottle at 10-11pm, but never got one in the middle of the night before.

    2. We don't know what we're going to use after he's 1. He's on Elecare right now because of milk/soy allergies (So I know how you feel dealing with that!) We haven't done our trial yet so I'm not sure what we'll move to. Either Elecare Jr., coconut milk or mmmaayybbee cow's milk, but I doubt it. Also, I'm not a huge fan of cow's milk anyway.

    3. He started walking at 9 months, but that's really early. He has been trying to walk since 6/7 mo (w/ us holding his hands...don't know what his rush with it was all about) He doesn't say much though, he's definitely focusing on physical milestones!

    1.  Do you give a bottle before bed?  If so, how soon before bed?  How big is the bottle and do they wet through their diaper overnight??   When do you plan on breaking the bottle before bed habit??

Right now our bedtime routine is dinner, bath, pj's, playtime, bottle, brushing teeth and book. She definitely doesn't need the bottle to go to bed, she goes to bed wide awake (usually!). Right now she is bottle free during the day (sippy cups only--except for the bedtime bottle.) I plan to transitioning to the sippy cup at bedtime starting on Friday, and gradually making it earlier each day-so it coincides with dinner. Then just give a drink of water at bedtime. My goal is by 12 months to eliminate with bedtime and have it with dinner.

    2.  If your LO takes a bottle in the middle of the night--what do you plan to give them once they move to whole milk?  Will you just be giving them regular cold milk??  I'm not sure what to do with DS2--he too has a milk allergy but is on alimentum soon to be rice milk.

She doesn't take a bottle in the middle of the night. For the most part, she sleeps through the night--and if she wakes up, can usually be rocked back to sleep. (And that it is more due to a dirty diaper or teething that she has woken up) If she did, I would just give her water.

    3.  Is your LO walking yet?  (just being curious---I know everyone is different)

No walking or talking. She wants to do both. She stands and cruises, and when she isn't paying attention she will let go--however, as soon as she realizes that she is not holding onto anything--she panics and falls. She walks with a push walker though.

    ETA:

    4.  What time is bedtime (and wake time)?

BeerBedtime is between 6:00-6:30, depending on how she naps during the day. And usually during that time she is fast asleep. Up until a couple of weeks ago her wake up was 5:15-5:45. The last two weeks it has been 6:00-6:30.Beer

  • 1.  Yes, she still gets a bottle immediately before she is put in her crib for the night. It's 6 oz of milk. Her diaper is full in the a.m., but it is very rare for it to leak. When do I plan on breaking the habit? Errr.... soon? :-P

    2.  She does not take a bottle in the middle of the night, but she does get cold milk straight from the fridge whenever she drinks milk.

    3.  Is your LO walking yet?  Crusing, not walking.

    4.  What time is bedtime (and wake time)? 8 p.m.- 6 a.m.

    1. Do you give a bottle before bed? If so, how soon before bed? How big is the bottle and do they wet through their diaper overnight?? When do you plan on breaking the bottle before bed habit??

I give a 7 oz. bottle at night before bed. It is about 75% WCM and 25% formula. I plan on breaking the bedtime bottle around 15 -18 months.

We have tried transitioning out of this pattern and it's turned in to him waking up 2 times a night now----bottles BOTH times-- and wetting through at least once. Before that, we were giving him about a 4-5 oz bottle before bed and it was a 50/50 chance of him wetting through.

I would give him back the bedtime bottle because that seems like a better habit than the habit of waking up twice a night. Although, even with the bedtime bottle, my DD (around 9-10 months) started waking up and wanting a middle of the night bottle. I finally just quit giving it to her and she didn't seem to care much. Just gave her the pacifier and laid her back down. We bedshare. Also, I have never had trouble with overnight diaper leaks. I have used Pampers & now use The Honest Company diapers.

I will either give her WCM or possibly 5 oz. WCM and 2 oz. formula. I may warm it up just a bit so it's not "refrigerator cold" but not really warm either.

    3. Is your LO walking yet? (just being curious---I know everyone is different) --I was hoping he'd be walking by his birthday (or his party at least)--but not sure he will be. He can "freeze stand" LOL--and he's trying..but not there yet. But I couldn't be more thrilled because DS1 was very much delayed and wasn't even CRAWLING by this point...so this is exciting for us. ETA: 4. What time is bedtime (and wake time)?

    Yes

    1.  Do you give a bottle before bed?  If so, how soon before bed?  How big is the bottle and do they wet through their diaper overnight??   When do you plan on breaking the bottle before bed habit?? Yes, Andrew get's a 6 oz bottle right before bed and usually does not finish it because he falls asleep.  He usually wakes up with a full pee diaper but does not leak out of it.  I would like to have him broke of his bedtime bottle within a month or two but I have a feeling that I'm going to have a REALLY hard time doing that because he is so dependent on that bottle to put him to sleep.

--We have tried transitioning out of this pattern and it's turned in to him waking up 2 times a night now----bottles BOTH times-- and wetting through at least once.   Before that, we were giving him about a 4-5 oz bottle before bed and it was a 50/50 chance of him wetting through.

Andrew doesn't normally wake up during the night, but if he does for some reason wake up too early in the morning, then I will give him a bottle of WCM and he nurses on that and goes back to sleep sometimes.

--We've never had to do this with DS1 because he had a milk allergy so it was breastmilk and then we moved to just water I think.

    3.  Is your LO walking yet?  (just being curious---I know everyone is different)  He is sort of walking now.  He will take a few unassisted steps (5-10 steps) and them plop down on his butt.

    4.  What time is bedtime (and wake time)?  Andrews bedtime is between 930 and 10 and he wakes up around 830-930am.

DS1 weaned himself of the night bottle and I hope DS2 does it too.

    2.  If your LO takes a bottle in the middle of the night-- at this age, a middle of the night bottle is a pacifier, and unnecessary, IMO. That said, DS STTN 90% of the time. If he does wake, it's usually because he's sick, so we give him a bottle.

    3.  Is your LO walking yet? yes, he's been walking since right before turning 11 months old. He's not walking everywhere, but he walks mostly.

    4.  What time is bedtime (and wake time)? bedtime is between 7:30-830pm. He wakes up around 6:30-7:30

  • 1.  Do you give a bottle before bed? yes.  If so, how soon before bed?  right before bed. How big is the bottle and do they wet through their diaper overnight?? 6oz, no.  When do you plan on breaking the bottle before bed habit?? no idea, not for awhile.

I'd go up a size on diapers to see if that helps with peeing through the diaper.

    2.  If your LO takes a bottle in the middle of the night--what do you plan to give them once they move to whole milk? whole milk. Will you just be giving them regular cold milk?? yes, we give cold breastmilk or formula now.

    No

    4.  What time is bedtime (and wake time)? 6:30-7pm.  Wake up at 4:45 (bottle) and then back down until 6ish.
