What baby books are you reading?

One of my friends sent us a box of like 10 baby books;-) I'm reading "What to Expect when you're Expecting" and DH is reading "The Expectant Father." Every night we read in bed together and discuss what we've read. It's been a lot of fun and extremely informational.

  • Wow...you guys are good!  With DD, I read WTE and DH read babycenter.  We still use Babycenter for random qustions about DD and now this pregnancy.

  • The only one I'm reading (because I heard it's the best) is Mayo Clinic Guide to a Healthy Pregnancy. It's great and really informative!
  • I opted out of the What to Expect books because I have the app on my phone.  Plus, I've been told the information is somewhat outdated.

I'm reading "The Happiest Baby on the Block", "Ina May Gaskin's Guide to Childbirth", and "Bringing Up Bebe".  One of my girlfriends is sending me "Push", "Smart Woman's Guide to Childbirth", and "Belly Laughs".

  • I read Belly Laughs and a book on my pregnancy week by week but can't remember the name of it. For fun I am also reading Chicken soup for the expectant mother's soul.

  • I'm currently reading "What to Expect", one of my good friends from my book club is 8mths pregnant with her second and once I'm at the point of telling people I'm pregnant I'm going to ask for her reccommendations since she is a reading machine!

  • I sat and read Belly Laughs within a matter of a couple hours on my kindle.  It was pretty funny so I couldn't put it down.

I've also got Your Pregnancy Week by Week on my kindle.

  • Ina May is great, I'm currently reading "The Thinking Woman's Guide to a Better Birth" which is a great read if you have any interest in a drug free childbirth or using a midwife or doula. She has a midwife and doula background and opposes alot of the routine procedures and OB method, but as with anything, you read it with a grain of salt and take what applies to you, your baby and your pregnancy.

  • When I found out I was pregnant I ordered a bunch of books from the library- I tend to read quickly and they aren't usually things you want to re-read. I already read all the Ina May Gaskins books before I found out I was pregnant which are good. Then I read the mayo clinic one, which I also really liked. I hated a girlfriends guide to pregnancy, I thought it was bossy and condescending and just plain wrong about half the time. The only book I bought is pregnancy day by day. Which I love- it has tips and advice mixed in with how the baby is developing every single day, which is a lot of fun. I read it every morning (each page is one day) before I go to work.  I would also recommend watching the business of being born if you have netflix you can stream it for free, Oh and I love the nova program Life's Greatest Miracle, it is AMAZING:

  • The first time around I read and liked Girlfriend's Guide to Pregnancy the best, also read Prengancy Week By Week but thought it was really redundant and overly fearful. I didn't actually read WTE until my son was born and I started with The First Year, and it was helpful if you take their paranoid advice with a grain of salt!

Another one that I'd recommend is Eating for Pregnancy. A friend sent DH "Be Prepared:  A Practical Handbook for New Dads". I found it kind of shallow and useless but he liked it so I guess that means it was targeted for new dads, not new moms!

  • I'm really liking You and Your Baby: Pregnancy Your ultimate week by week pregnancy guide by D. Laura Riley and The Mayo Clinic Guide to a Healthy Pregnancy.

  • I agree! I am reading that one as well and love it. I also started reading your pregnancy after 35. Horrible!  Talks about don't  use drugs, wear your seat belt. I was looking for more about issues when you are pregnant after 35

These two books have opposite messages. ;) I'd leave WTE on the shelf if you're looking for panic-free.

This time around, I'll probably just flip through "Your Pregnancy and Birth", re-read "Exercising Through Your Pregnancy", "Easing Labor Pain", and flip through the earmarked pages of "Active Labor". My SIL is also loaning me "birthing from within".
