I'm sorry but it just sounds like you are basing your opinion of "most people" on the experience you had with your friend and her boyfriend and his family.  Please open your mind a bit and realize that you generalizing on a very large group from your experience with what?  8-9 people?  Max?  Also, let's not forget that it's not just Mexicans who are here illegally.  They just seem to be your target.

You don't even make sense. I was talking about all criminals and was basing it on the fact that everyone knows that when you commit a crime there is the possibility of going to jail and yet people do it anyway. Obviously they must either a) not care if they go to jail or b) think they wont get caught or else they wouldn't do it.

    I see.

You don't think the uncle who owns the restaurant - and presumably has a fairly large amount of money/assets - is concerned with being arrested, fined, imprisoned, deported, and losing everything he has?

He wasn't. Most people that do illegal things have the mindset that they wont get caught. Obviously all criminals are aware that they could get arrested, fined, imprisoned, etc but they don't care they think it wont happen to them.

You should probably stop hanging out with criminals now that you have a kid.

Do you have any friends that aren't criminals?  I'm guessing not, since you're so knowledgeable about their mindset.

Maybe try your local baby board, or meetup.com.

Yes because I totally hang out with criminals all the time Confused

Ahem.  Do you think anyone that doesn't look like you is ILLEGAL?  Otherwise, how are you making the determination that the people who got jobs are illegal?  They might be immigrants with working papers, but the whole reason that "illegals" work in fields or other manual labor is because they don't have the working papers to work someone like a restaurant.

No I am not racist I don't judge people by their look. I know because I know people. And seriously? You REALLY think all illegal immigrants work in a field? What world do you live in? You do know that papers can be faked?

Being against SB1070 doesn't mean that you're A-OK with illegal immigration.  I've always been a supporter of a guest worker program, to ensure no one on either side is getting hurt.  After this debate, though, I'd settle for some kind of swap program, but I don't think they'd take you.

And you make it sound like anyone who thinks SB1070 is bad law is busy smuggling people over the border to TAKE YER JOB.   You also seem unable to grasp that just because someone is brown and speaks with an accent, it doesn't mean that they're here illegally.

  • imageauthorofdreamz:

Maybe if we can get all the druggie american citizens off of drugs, the cartels with their drug and violence wouldn't have a need to come into the U.s.

Most mexican families that come here illegally are looking for work and the "American Dream." Unfortunately, the violence that the cartels bring overshadows that. Also, all these "illegals" are doing the b.s. jobs thats nobody wants to do,

Would you want to go pick fruit for 12 hours a day and get paid a few bucks an hour to do so?

Something needs to be done about the issue, that's obvious. I also do believe they should learn English.

My mother and her family came to the U.S. to work in the fields and became citizens. My dad is a border hopper and married my mother. They've both been working since the age of 12. Not all immigrants are the devil.

I get so tired of hearing this.. In this economy, there is no such thing as a "job no wants to do". Of course no one WANTS to pick fruit for 12 hours a day but no one WANTS to watch their family starve to death either.

Oh and plenty of illegal immigrants work in fast food restaurants as well they don't all pick fruit.

    2 examples do disprove this:

Another teacher at my school's husband had been out of work for over a year.  They have two young kids.  He refused to even apply at fast food restaurants, grocery stores, etc.  He just claimed unemployment while looking for something that aligned with his college degree.  He finally grudgingly took a job at Best Buy.  They now live with her parents.  I guarantee there would have been no fruit picking for him.  No fast food either.

A friend of the family's husband has been out of work for 3 years.  He also collects unemployment while waiting for something in his field.  Luckily they have a huge savings from some inheritance money.  It's getting close to being out though.  No fruit picking or fast food there either.

Yes, you're right. What I listed were EXAMPLES of a prevailing attitude. I could have listed others but those are the two I know best. There are, in fact, jobs that most Americans wont do. Even those with families to support who are living off of unemployment because they refuse those jobs. I guess I should just keep my examples to myself.

Wow, I guess it's too easy to forget that our ancestors were all immigrants, too.  And lots of them never learned english!

Have a heart.  Yes, it's a problem and it needs to be addressed somehow.  Yes, there are some illegal immigrants who bring drugs and violence to the US.  However, there are MANY more who are just geniunely looking to make a better life and a better future for themselves and their children.

Yup, I remember where and how my ancestors came to this country. And the ones that were already here and got the short end of the stick. It is hard to focus good thoughts on the illegal immigrants who are here just to make/take money from our economy to send back to their family in another country. I liked our illegal neighbors from Mexico until a US Marshall came knocking on our door looking for information on a man that used to live there. He was wanted in Mexico for multiple rapes and murders, and he came to this country to escape "justice" in his country. I stopped attempting to talk to them.

Ahhh, I see.  If one is a criminal, they ALL must be criminals!  They do all look alike, after all.

Yup. EVERYONE knows white (let's face it, the immigrants discussed here are not generally caucasian) people don't do crime Confused

Excuse me? Are you calling me racist for describing a situation that happened right next door to my house involving illegal immigrants who I was friendly with? Yes, I happen to know that only 2 of the 8 people in the house were here legally. And yes I know they are all from Mexico. How you might ask? Because I am neighborly with my neighbors. Forgive me if I am cautious for my life and my family's lives. Douche bags come in every color of the rainbow, so don't put words in my mouth.

From what you said (and correct me if I'm wrong) you stopped speaking to a Mexican family just because someone who used to live there was a Mexican convicted criminal.  I see that as not speaking to someone because of where they are from not what they did.

Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to put my statement in the right light. I said I stopped talking to my neighbors who harbored a criminal. Reguardless of their skin color or the country they are from, if you're friends with a criminal of that magnitude, I don't want to be around you.

(1)Good point. But I think the underlying problem is that those illegals who contribute to the violence and drugs have less reguard for getting caught. In places like Mexico and Columbia, drugs and violence run the country. So of course they think they can get away with it here, too.

You don't seem to know anything at all about the drug cartels. They are violent, but they aren't stupid. They know they can't get away with it in the US, which is why they confine the majority of their violence to other illegal immigrants.

Tuscon, for example, has a very high kidnapping rate. But the vast majority of the victims of kidnapping are illegal immigrants, not Americans (or even legal immigrants). Why? Because they know that illegal immigrants are too scared to go to the police and thus they are easy prey.

Which still makes my point that they are trying to operate the same way they do in their home country with no reguard to getting caught. Even in their home country, those that they prey on won't go to the cops for help because most cops are corrupted. Guess by whom?!

Your point makes no sense. They don't operate the same way they do in their home country. They don't target citizens. They don't bribe cops (at least not on a large scale). They don't commit extensive acts of indiscriminate violence. They don't dump truckloads of headless bodies in the middle of the street.

There have been something like 40,000 people murdered in Mexico in the past few years. The violence committed by the cartels in the US is absolutely nowhere near that scale.

And since their victims in the US are illegal immigrants, I don't see why you really care that they're kidnapping and murdering.

Also, it's been years since Colombia was "run by drugs." It's actually quite stable and has garnered a great deal of international business investment. The days of Pablo Escobar and the Cali Cartel have long passed.

Funny, another neighbor of mine from Columbia (came here illegally, but eventually got his green card) says that though it's better in Columbia than when he was a small child (the reason for his parents getting him out of there), it's far from the "stable" environment you seem to think it is.

I posted what I did because earlier it seemed like you were saying that anyone who was out of work and really needed a job would be willing to take whatever they could find, including fruit picking and/or fast food.  I simply know that to not be true.  If it misinterpreted your meaning or extrapolated too much from what you said, I truly apologize.  I do realize that there are people on both sides of our argument here (people who wouldn't take those jobs and people who would), so going back and forth with a list of examples will not be necessary.

I'm done with this thread.  It's making me stressed, and I don't need any more of that in my life right now.  I hope everyone enjoys the debate.  It's definitely the most action our board has seen in a while.  Well, at least since last week's UO thread :)

In my case, yes. You are not allowed in the great US of A if you are wanted for criminal acts in your home country.

"The list of crimes of moral turpitude that are reasons for exclusion from the U.S. is also quite detailed. The most common types of crimes involving moral turpitude that would make you inadmissible are murder, manslaughter, rape, theft, bribery, forgery, aggravated battery, prostitution, and fraud. At this time, driving under the influence, breaking and entering, disorderly conduct and simple assault are not considered crimes that make a person inadmissible to the U.S., although if there are multiple convictions and or other misdemeanors, you could be denied entry."

I'm done with this thread.  It's making me stressed, and I don't need any more of that in my life right now.  I hope everyone enjoys the debate.  It's definitely the most action our board has seen in a while.  Well, at least since last week's UO thread :)

YesAgreed. Let's go have a drink! Drinks

Colombia has two o's. Columbia is in New York City.

And still waiting for OP to show her face.

I'm sorry, I've been at work all day... haven't had a chance to get on here until now.

I'm firm in my stance, but I absolutely respect everyone's opinions. I just wanted to see how others felt about the issue, not what the media spews out at us.  My intention was not to start a nasty debate, just to see how other moms feel about this issue.

I wouldn't want to work in a fast food restaurant. Teeneagers don't even want to work in a fast food restaurant, which is why illegals do it.

Seriously? What planet do you live on? Wait until a new fast food place opens near you and go apply and see who you see there..50 year old men in business suits with master degrees that want to work at McDonalds because they can't find work anywhere else and need to support their families. Everyone I know has applied to at least one fast food restaurant. I apply to one almost daily but can't get hired because there are too many illegals working there.

Chain restaurants can't hire people without a valid SS#. My dad works for Tyson Meats. They check every SS#. They are 10% white people, 90% immigrants (legal, even!). White people won't take those jobs because they are yucky, even though they pay decent wages.

This is when they steal them.

I live in Arizona, and identity theft is an incredibly large problem.

absolutely. my identity and social security number were taken by someone. every year for the rest of my life I have to report to the IRS that my identity was stolen and that my only income was in the state of Arizona. How is that ok?

Maybe I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure she's a teacher and has probably been working all day.  I'm a teacher and this is the first time I've really had to post since last night.

Or maybe I don't know what I'm talking about, and she just doesn't want to post.

I am a teacher. i work maybe 8-10 hours a day. If anybody has any clue about teaching, as lemonJAM does, I don't show up for work when the kids get here, and leave when they leave, I stay and work my butt off so I can spend some time with my family and not bring work home all the time.
