Re: Moms of Boys

  • I have a Hayden Thomas.  Some other names that we liked were Nolan, Grady, Bowen and Gavin.  Good luck!  I think boy names are tough.

I love so many of the boys names here.  If we have a second son, I would love to name him Miles, but that is my boss's name and that would be weird.

Richard Colton (Richard is a family name, so he goes by Colton)

REALLY! Finally a mama I can ask these questions of...

Was it hard to explain to people to call your son Colton? How do you handle a birth announcement?  Do you picture him going by R. Colton ...... when he is older?

DH is Joseph Carl, My father in law is Joseph Albert, My dad is Joseph Nicholas and my grandfather was Joseph (no middle name).  We don't want a Jr nor do we want a JJ.

I guess I am worried about screwing up LO with a complicated name situation for life!

I should have read all the responses before responding.

I've always been called by my middle name and we choose to call our children by their middle names so I guess I didn't think it was all that bad!

As to your questions - We just tell people that using our middle names is a family tradition and that their first names are family names.  Our birth announcements had their first and middle names on them.  Most people we sent them to know we use middle names but I do know some people I work with called my son "Joseph" when I got back from maternity leave and I just would say "oh, we call him Sully."

As an adult you sort of get pushed into using your first initial because most forms will ask for first name, middle initial and last name so when I fill those out I put "V Kelly" in the first name spot (my name is Victoria Kelly).  I'll admit that it took me quite a few years to get everything I have in the same name and that even at age 40 I get asked a lot "what does the V stand for" and then "why don't you like the name Victoria" but it's not as though using my  middle name has been a big burden.  If anything, it's a conversation starter.

Kelly, Mom to Christopher Shannon 9.27.06, Catherine Quinn 2.24.09, Trey Barton lost on 12.28.09, Therese Barton lost on 6.10.10, Joseph Sullivan 7.23.11, and our latest, Victoria Maren 11.15.12

Secondary infertility success with IVF, then two losses, one at 14 weeks and one at 10 weeks, then success with IUI and then just pure, crazy luck.  Expecting our fifth in May as the result of a FET.

  • Preston Perry and Brady Robert.  We just liked Preston and Perry is my brother who passed away 10 years ago. Brady (maiden name of great great grandmother) and a name that we just like that happened to be a family name. The Robert is after my grandfather (Robert Fred), my uncle who's middle name is Robert after his dad, my mother who was named Robin after her father Robert, and DH's grandfather Robert!

  • Dylan James and Braylon Cory.  Both of their middle names are family names.  Our last name is definitely more known as a man's first name so we nixed a lot of names we liked because they're more common as last names than first names, and most of our friends and family have boys so a lot of names were "taken" already.

DH picked it and I picked the girl's names.  We thought at first it was going to be 2 boys so it was going to be Hunter and William but call him Will.  William is my Dad's name.  Boy names are hard!

Brady Allen (Allen is a family name)

Nolan William (William is a family name)

I also love Noah, Logan, and Jacob

  • Conor Ray.  We liked Connor, but my H (a sports geek) saw a MLB player with it spelled differently and liked it.  Ray is my dads' and grandpas' MN.

He was very nearly a Connor, Preston or Tyler... we did not decide until we were about to leave the hospital.

for MN - well, that was a total spur of the moment thing (in my mind Dean had always been the MN) ... at the hospital DH made it clear that he wanted him to have something "formal he could whip out that sounds distinctive and solid" I think I was still high on painkillers! :)  I actually really love it now that I know him.   Sometimes I even refer to him as "The Gus" ... :)

FWIW my brother is one of 5 or 6 familial Josephs.... he is Joseph Patrick - JP.

I can answer this for my DH.  His name is Robert Bradley, after his Dad - Robert Jesse.  He goes by Brad.  He LOATHES having a first name he doesn't use.  His drivers license says Robert B. and his medical records all have Robert B.  It's just a big pain in his arse.  Granted, part of it is because his Mom is an idiot and put Robert B.on his social security card.  Who the hell does that?  Anyway, just from his point of view he was adamant that whatever we name the kid should be their name (or at least an obvious nickname from actual name).  He's on the fence about Elizabeth, but calling her Libby.

  • Jude Patrick and Luca Blaise.  We liked the first names because they are not too common yet not too offbeat and are actually older names.  The middle names have personal meaning.  Good luck!

In your case, can you switch and name him Chase Joseph?  it might be simpler and pave the way for your children to not have to name their children Joseph too.

I like this, too. I got so tired of having to correct teachers, etc. that I went by a shortened version of my first name, that I vowed to only use intended first names as first names. Kinda hated that we didn't use DH's name as a middle name for either son, but it starts with 'Ro' like our last name. It always sounded better as a first name, but I wanted to call them by their middle names if I did that. Anyway, I talked to a lot of people who didn't mind going by their middle name, so just a personal decision, KWIM? Our boys are Grant Christian and Chase Ethan (so obviously I love the name!) GL!

    Nikolai Joseph :)

I suggested Nicholas and MH said "you mean like Santa Claus?" Tongue Tied He countered with Nikolai after Nikola Tesla and it stuck. Joseph is MH's middle name.

Interesting!  May I ask why after Nikola Tesla? Any link to former Yugoslavia in your family anywhere?  Just curious.  We named our son Nikolas - my husband is Croatian, born and raised, his entire family still in Croatia.  We both liked the name and my husband has always been a huge Tesla geek. :)   Nikolas' middle name is Milos, after DH's father and grandfather (although Milos is their first name).

  • Theodore Patrick - we liked Teddy for a nn, but figured that as he got older, he had lots of options for his name.  He could go by Ted, Teddy, Theo, or the full name.  And we liked that it isn't very popular...although we have now met 2-3 others that are his age.

MH is a huge Tesla geek too :)  That's why he liked Nikolai.  He never paid attention to the fact that Tesla's name is spelled Nikola which is why we spelled it differently.  No Yugoslavian in the family.  The closes we come is Ukranian on my side.

  • London Bailey.  Bailey is a family name.  London was #600-something in the boys list for popular names when we picked it out.  It was also #500-something on the girls list.  I don't think it sounds like a girl name, but surprisingly, it has risen to the mid 100s for girls.  Hopefully, L won't be surrounded by a bunch of girls with his name by the time he's in high school.  ;)

Not at all.  Birth announcement was full name but most knew he was Colton at that point (preemie = announcements at 6 weeks).   I doubt he'll ever use his first name, because H's family is has overly abused all R names including that one.   I do have to continually correct the nurses at our pedi's office because he is Richard on our insurance, but it isn't that big a deal.   When we introduce him to people we just use Colton, if they ask about middle name then we elaborate.
