I had an ultrasound done yesterday at the doctor. I am currently 28 weeks and 4 days. The doctor said the baby was on the big side (weighing 3 pounds and 4 ounces so far) and that he was measuring in the 95th percentile.
What does that mean? He didn't explain the 95 percentile. Okay, I'm guessing he is a big boy...what does this mean for the baby? the delivery?
The doctor seemed very happy with the measurements, but I just wish I knew more because I keep reading online and getting more confused.
Thoughts? Anyone experience this? Is my baby big for this stage in the pregnancy?
Re: What? 95 percentile?
If the doctor isn't worried then I wouldn't worry. There's not really anything you can do anyway. Just ask about it next time you go in.
It just means that only 5% of babies are bigger than yours at this stage.
This... but you still have quite a bit of time for him to slow down growing... he may just have had a growth spurt.
Last week I had a growth u/s and baby is in the 93 percentile and measuring 3 weeks ahead in size. So with your 95% it means that if there were 100 babies in a room, your baby would be the 95th biggest, meaning only 5 babies would be bigger than him. (that's how my dr explained it when I asked) My dr said it's nothing to worry about and that maybe baby had a growth spurt and could slow down. We did discuss options for L&D with having a large baby. Don't be afraid to stop your dr and ask these questions while visiting with them. That's what their job is.
As others have explained, it means that your baby is averaging bigger. Nothing to worry about if the doctor is ok with it.
I am a smaller person 5'2" and was 120 lbs pre-pregnancy with my first DD. Her head turned out to be in the 95% when she was born and I was able to have her vaginally. It wasn't comfortable, but it was doable. So as long as your doctor is happy, rest easy.
