I have been planning for a natural water birth. But as of lately, I may be developing pre-eclampsia. I'm already 38 weeks and am hoping I'll be able to wait it out if things stay steady, and I'll be able to go into labor naturally.
However, if I am diagnosed and things get severe, I will need to be induced. The hospital I am going to is very natural birth friendly/low intervention, and I do trust that if they recommend an induction, that it really is necessary for me and the baby's safety.
So, if that were to become the case... Do you think it's possible to still stick to your plans as much as possible, even though you would be being induced? I know that I would still be able to labor in the tub, (unless I required magneisium..sp?) which I don't know how because I've always pictured having cords and IV's all attached to you while being induced. But they said they have 'waterproof everything' and I could labor in the tub.
But inductions can take days, and I know that pitocin would most likely at some point be distributed..
Has anyone else been induced but was still able to not have an epidural, or other medications? Is a natural birth still possible when you are induced? Is it still considered 'natural' birth since you're being induced?

I just found all this out today- as I'm due today and no sign of LO ready to make an entrance. I'm scheduled for balloon/Foley catheter Mon Apr 30th (manually opens cervix), followed by a May 2nd induction at hospital (piton)- I also have a natural birth/ hypnobirth/ water tub birth planned with my Doula. She said that they'll put me on the pitocin, then take me off so I can water birth- so, you can still follow your plan- provided there's no medical emergencies or issues.
Although.... my Doula thinks LO will be here before all that- and also- LO could come 20 min to 72 hrs after Foley catheter- before pitocin- so plenty of opportunity for LO to arrive prior.
Statistically 50% women deliver before 40 wks, 40% at 41 wks, and 10% 42 wks. So, stats are on your side to hopefully have LO w/o induction -depending pun when your OB induces- mine waits til 42.
It's definitely possible to stick to your plan of a natural birth after being induced. It will make it very challenging, but it can be done. I had to receive pitocin because my water broke and I was not having any contractions. I was very lucky in that I had a nurse that allowed me to be off the monitors for 20 min increments to move and shower! You may get a nurse that understands your desire to be as med-free as possible and help accomodate that.
Good luck. Know that it can be done, but also remember that there is nothing wrong with pain medications if you need it.
Yes, I was induced, with Cervidil and Pitocin, no epidural or other medications.
Yes, a pain med free birth is still possible when you are induced.
As for whether it's still considered "natural" birth, I don't really care what other people consider it to be. It was the way my beautiful daughter came into this world. My son was born at home after labor started spontaneously, but I don't consider his birth to be "better" just because more people would call it "natural."

Thanks for posting this, OP. I hope that your doctor finds you without the pre-e but if induction is necessary, then I hope it goes well for you.
And thanks to the other posters who shared their stories. Obviously I'd like to birth with no or as few as possible interventions, and had worried that starting with induction (for a necessary reason like pre-e) would inevitably foil all my plans.
Glad to hear stories about that not being the case--very encouraging.
