what to use after the swing???

My son loves his swing. It calms him and he enjoys napping in there....mostly his cat naps in the evenings after day care. We have been trying to put him in his crib for naps on wknds. I know pretty soon he will be too big for his swing and wondered what u all use now?? If anything. Ds is 4.5 months.

Re: what to use after the swing???

  • Crib.  I'm not a fan of napping on me and DS is fine with that.  Pretty much the only time he sleeps on me is if he's sick. He takes his naps in the crib, unless we're out and about and he sleeps in his carseat.

I did try DS in the swing again a few weeks ago when he was sick and unable to sleep laying flat at 4am.  I woke up an hour later (I was on the couch by the swing) to a funny sound.  He'd woken up, caught the side bar and was holding himself steady.  So, the swing is out.  He's clearly outgrown it.

If you're looking for transition places (i.e. places to stick the baby while you need him contained), try a PnP, walker, jumper, jumperoo or excersaucer.  They all have limited uses, but do allow you to have five whole minutes to get dinner started.  DS loved his jumperoo until he was about 7m (then he got bored), and would play it in for at least 20 minutes.  I limited his time in it to once a day though.

DS now spends the vast majority of his time on the floor.  He's crawling, sitting and working on pulling up, so he is all over the place.   I've created a "corral" of toys that somewhat contain him.  They're aimed, really, to slow him down enough that I can get to him before he gets into anything he shouldn't.  If we had a playroom, I'd use that and make it fully child proofed, but we don't.

  • We completely dropped the swing at about 4-4.5m and started to put him in his crib for all naps. He got used to it.

  • DD has gotten to like sleeping in her swing too. She has an ear infection right now but as soon as she's better she's going to start sleeping in her crib wheather she likes it or not. She's already 17 lbs and getting to big for the swing.

  • I've been running into the same problem lately.  DD is crawling, sitting, and trying to pull up.  I tried to put her in the pnp last night so I could start dinner and she acted like I had put her in jail; she screamed and pushed her hands against the sides.  I'd love to be able to contain her somehow just for safety when I have to leave the room for a minute, but no ideas so far.  DH and I aren't big on baby equipment.  We have a swing and that's it.  I want her to explore on the floor, but there are times it would be nice to contain her for a few minutes!

  • Well, now that DD2 is crawling and pulling to stand, she doesn't reaaly like to be put into anything.

We started getting her to nap in the crib around 4 months when she outgrew her swing; she's been sleeping in her crib/bassinet at night since day one. She did enjoy playing in her exersaucer and jumperoo for few months though before she became mobile.

  • MD never liked her swing so she never napped in it after her first few days home. She is in her crib for naps.
