Pregnant after IF

Does your OB not do US? Long vent.

After graduating from RE he recommended an obgyn in the next town for me. I didn't want to go to my old one because I thought the wait was ridiculous. I would wait my turn for over an hour with an appointment. Also, I think she has been doing this for so long that she has begun to lose her sensitivity chip. She was a little cold with my last mc. Asking me why are you upset, you are young, no need to cry. Actually more like scolding me.

Anyway, the obgyn he recommended is on maternity leave until June, but I decided to try another one at the same practice. Receptionist had me sit with my cup of pee in my hand for ten minutes. Then turns out OB doesn't do US. I was really upset because I need that reassurance. I was actually kind of rude and asked what he would be doing when I see him. He said we would talk and see how I'm doing. I told him so something could be happening and we wouldn't know. He said that If something was going wrong we probably couldn't stop it anyway.  He says that every other obgyn he knows doesn't do US, that they all send patients to radiology. Great so I have to make two separate appts, two co pays, and two days of searching for parking. Oh and if something looks bad on US I'll have to wait until he call me back because US tech sends him the results.

Needless to say, I think I'll be going back to old OB . At least her staff is sweet, she has US machine and uses it every visit, and I know it's a long wait but she must have so many patients for a reason.i just don't want to keep jumping from OB to OB. Thanks for letting me vent.

  • Yes, my OB does the us there in the office. I have heard of others that don't, but only here on the bump. It seems to be normal in my area that its done in your OB's office. GL as you find the right OB for you!

  • Oh honey no. It's perfectly normal to only get the early dating ultrasound, maybe the NT scan, then the 20 week anatomy scan, and possibly one near the end. More than than is the exception, NOT the norm. If you need reassurance, I recommend a doppler. It helps ease my mind in the month between visits and if I am not feeling much movement.

  • My OB's office doesn't do u/s at all and the office I go to is located in a hospital!!  I do wish they would do them there, maybe not at every appt, but some.  To get a u/s they write a script to go to an imaging center.  Since I go to a MFM I get my u/s there, but there is 6 weeks between my NT scan and my a/s and that is a long wait!

In fact, the OB I saw at my last appt. wouldn't even try to find both babies heartbeats on the dopler.  So I am considering changing OB's for that and other reasons, but I probably wouldn't switch for not getting a u/s every time.  You have to do what makes you feel comfortable though.

  • I don't think my OB does U/S in the office.  I've seen her twice so far (8w & 12w) and there's no u/s, and not even doppler.  As far as I can tell, the exam rooms are tiny and there's no way they can fit an u/s machine in there.

My OB's office is in a medical bldg attached to the hospital.  So, for my 12w NT scan, I was sent to the MFM dept in the hospital.  They scheduled both my NT scan and OB appt back-to-back on the same day, so I only had to go there once.

My OB told me that my next visit w/her at 16w, she'll be checking hb with doppler in her office.  My next u/s is a/s at 18w and again it'll be done at MFM dept.  I personally don't think it's routine to do u/s at every OB appt unless one is high risk.

  • I only had 1 u/s with my OB for my first appt with him. All my u/s are done with my peri.

  • I think it is pretty standard to not get us at the ob. My ob office is in the same building as a very good ultrasound place, so when it is time for us, I just schedule the us appt with ob one to follow. I am usually given a short preliminary radiology report to show my ob at the appt.

I don't pay copays at either of these appts with my insurance so that hadn'tbothers bother either.

  • My OB doesn't do ultrasounds.  She sends her patients to radiology, which is located in the same building.  Since I'm AMA and have a history of miscarriages and infertility, my OB ordered an ultrasound around 11 weeks just to make sure everything was OK.  Other than that I've had the NT scan and the anatomy scan.  As long as everything continues to progress normally, I don't think she will order any additional ultrasounds.
                      Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker
  • My OB's office absolutely does ultrasounds.  Thank God!   With DD she even told me if I was ever worried or needed reassurance that I could ask for one.   I only took her up on that once, but it was nice to know it was available.

  • my OB doesnt do U/S. I had a quick one at 12ish weeks because they couldn't find the heartbeat. It was on a portable machine.

I had to wait forever as well.

In my experience, the OB's office is very different than the RE.

Exactly this.  After graduating, I had my NT and my a/s, and I have no more scheduled.  The doppler has saved my sanity.
However, that being said, if you are unhappy with your OB, switch.  Who cares how many times you switch OBs, you need to find one you are happy with.  It's worth it.  You are worth it.

  • I have not had my first u/s yet so I cannot chime in on the number of times one is done but it sounds to me like your frustration is more with the fact that your OB doesn't do them at all......that they send you to a radiolody department. If that is the case yes if it were me I would find a new one..... My OB/GYN has seen me for years and when I had pelvic pain he just sent me to a room down the hall to get wanded so I was able to find out during the same appointment that I had huge dermoid cysts..... I couldn't imagine having to go to a different building and radiology department to find that out.  Whether they are looking for a baby or something else I think an u/s machine needs to be a part of their diagnostic equipment....IMO.

  • THe OB group I use has ultrasound in their office and then my OB has an old machine in his pod that he used at my first visit with him.  I didn't need a scan since he knew I had my last one the week before with the RE but he wanted to see too so I got another scan at that visit.  He asked for permission to see too.  It was kind of cute and funny to see him so excited seeing the baby.  Plus baby was much more active that day so it was nice seeing her move.  After that, the only scans I've had were the NT scan at 12 wks and my anatomy scan (the tech did those on the nicer machine).  I'm also a doctor and as a perk of my job, we had a local radiologist come to my office to talk about her mobile ultrasound business so I also got an informal look at the baby at 23 wks.  I probably won't have another formal scan unless something develops or if I go past my due date.  It's part of the the monitoring to allow me to safely go to 42 wks before being induced.  We talked about doing a growth scan if my measurements seem off since I told him that we have big babies in my family.

  • Yes, mine does. I live by the rule that if I am the least bit uncomfortable with the level of care I am getting I am outta there! The last 2.5 years of my life has revolved around my desire for a child and inability to get pg. I take my care extremely seriously and if they aren't going to give me what I need for piece of mind (within reason, of course) I will find someone who will. I deserve at least that much.

  • My OB did one at 10 weeks because I was a fertiilty patient (she normally doesn't do one in the beginning) but some insurance companies only cover 2-3 of them. I had one at 10 weeks, a/s and will probably have one at 36wks to make sure baby is still in a head down position and the cord isn't wrapped around her neck or anything weird like that. You will/should have a doppler reading every OB visit though.

  • Mine doesn't and I really never thought anything of it. One of their offices has an u/s machine, but it's old and the doctors have no clue how to use it really.  Most appointments consist of bloodwork (if needed) a doppler check, and then just talking about how things are going, answering questions, etc.

I'm sent out for the NT Scan, the A/S, and another u/s at like 38 weeks to check for size.
