I hope I can get this all in, LO is in my arms in a milk coma and I actually have both hands to type!
On Monday (you can probably go back and find my post) I posted a 35/35 AW and vent that I was just feeling terrible. Aches in my joints and spine, muscular pain, headache, didn't sleep the night before etc. I took a hot shower in the morning which usually gets me going and I still felt bad. I went to work and my boss asked how I was I hanging in there, and I was honest that I barely was. He told me to head home (I've been on at will WFH schedule) so I did. Got home tried to nap but was getting the chills and hot flashes. Took my temp slight fever, got it to go down. Slept better that night.
Stayed home on Tues to work from home. I was feeling better, but figured I'd rest in case I was in fact fighting some odd bug. I took a nap around 2, woke up around 3 and went downstairs to watch Ellen. About 3:30 I was eating a banana and looking online for a baby book and felt a gush (which I had been experiencing to a degree for a week). I got up and ran to the bathroom and it was A LOT. (similar to a pee... not like full bladder long pee, but a regular bathroom trip. I had just gone to the bathroom so I knew it was impossible to be my bladder). I ran upstairs and it happened again. I called the on call nurse, told me to come in to get checked, the office is 2miles down the road. After throwing on H's sweats and a heavy pad that I just bought the day before for PP preparation I went over (and was stuck behind a school bus the whole way), and was told to head to the hospital. H met me at home and took out the dogs while I tried to throw a bag together with a towel between my legs. Of course we headed to the hospital around 4:45 - RUSH HOUR! Took us about 10 extra min, 30 total no biggie. Still no contractions.
Checked in, did all the paperwork and my contractions started. They were very irregular, anywhere from 4 to 8 min apart. I was in early labor and was hoping for a natural birth. Being only 35wks along, I was putting priority on keeping A safe and getting her here the best way possible. Her heartrate was strong and they were fine letting me try to get labor going on my own. I did have to have antibotics because of the water breaking, which I was okay with since she was early and so much was unknown. I also was monitored almost constantly, though I didn't have to be, I did like being able to see the patterns in my ctrx. I labored the whole night with no real change in ctrx and no sleep. From 2-3 min apart and back to 8 min. The doctor did the first cervical check at 7am (was holding off until active labor kicked in because she wanted to reduce infection risk). At 7am, still no active labor, I was fully effaced, but only 1cm. They let me labor another 3 hours. No changes. Still 1 cm at 10am.
We had the pitocin talk. I REALLY wanted to avoid pitocin. I knew if I got pitocin, the door for the epi would also be opening but at the same time, I was so concerned for the stress A was in (though still looking great on the monitor) I just wanted to help get her here quickly. I had been in labor for 19 hours at this point with little advancement. We started the drip at 2ml.
Ctrx increased quickly, as did the pain and back labor. I was so exhausted from being awake since 7am Tuesday morning (it was now 11am Wednesday) and not eating much of anything, I knew I was going to run out of energy before transition, I was already getting very pale and shaking between the ctrx.
At 11:40 I asked for the epi in hopes I could get an hour of sleep or so while finally dilating and get back on track for delivery. The epi was delivered at 12:20 and by almost 1pm I was feeling pressure and no pain. At 1:30 H and I were both about to lay down and try to get a nap in, and the doctor came in to check progress.
"Well, you're done. There's the head. We're having a baby now."
I went from 1 cm to 10 cm in < 3hrs. My contractions never were regular, still anywhere from 2 min to 6min apart. And since I had just had the epi administered an hour before my legs were dead. I could feel them and wiggle toes, but they felt like dead weight. I also had zero clue if my "pushes" were working. H looked over and confirmed the head was right there (and so much hair). The doctor asked for my hand and placed it on her head and I freaked! I couldnt believe it was real since I couldn't feel anything and that made it so real that there really was a baby right there! I pushed for 4 contractions (4 pushes each) over the course of 10 minutes and was told to stop. The next thing I know she's being placed on my chest. H was able to cut the cord and they took her after about 5-10min to do vital checks in room since she was preemie. She scored 8/9 on APGARS and had stable blood sugar at 56 - they wanted over 40.
Ashlynn Hazel born at 1:53pm 4/18 after 22.5 hours of labor. 5lbs 1oz and 17 1/4" long. By the time we were discharged (friday) she was 4lbs 12oz, but at her pedi appt today she was still there! She is nursing like a champ, but I'm also supplementing with pumped milk and formula since her calories are super important to her gaining weight and keeping her temperature up. She's absolutely amazing and seriously over achieving at everything. We are over the moon.
Thank you all so SO very much for all the T&Ps since my beta draw at 14dpo. The support of this board has been amazing and a life saver. I appreciate everything and wish all the May Moms especially luck with their upcoming deliveries (still can't believe my late May Baby is an April Baby). Thank you to OctoberArtist for being a great labor buddy and updating the board!!
