Hi Ladies - I am halfway through Ferber's book but have some questions if you don't mind sharing your experiences.
DS is 3.5 months and Pedi said no CIO until after 4 months. I am not sure if she also meant progressive waiting approach, but I'll assume so even though I am totally ready to implement this asap, as the term "drowsy but awake" is sheer fantasy in this house. DS has to be sound asleep in my arms before being put down for bed and each nighttime waking, and only naps on me or DH. I BF and right now am just working on not letting him fall asleep while nursing and decreasing the night feedings (we are down to 2, but he is still waking up a LOT during the night).
1 - What age did you implement the progressive waiting approach? Do you wish you had done it sooner or later?
2 - How will taking a week's vacation shortly after sleep training affect the progress? Do you have to start all over?
3 - Did you sleep train and nap train at the same time, or did you treat them separately?
4 - If sleep training in the RNP (reflux), will we have to re-train when he moves to the crib?
Any other words of wisdom are greatly appreciated!
Re: Ferber Moms: Age & Timing Q's (XP: 3-6 months / 6-9 months)
We did it right at 4 months it was just right
Vacation might setback
Did naps at 5 months but these took longer
I would transition to crib at same time
First time at 4.5 months and it did not go smoothly. Tried again at 7 months and it was cake.
Vacation will set you back if you change your methods while you travel. I recommend sticking to your new methods while traveling if you can.
Did naps at 7 months as well and it's a work in progress.
Definitely would move to the crib at the same time. It's not really fair to baby to put them in a confined place to learn to cry...they should be able to make themselves comfy and soothe however they choose. Reflux won't be an issue in terms of sleep position..that's a myth.
I was never worried about drowsy but awake. It's a nice idea, but some babies just don't get it. We did Ferber at just over 8 months, and it was the right time for us. When he was younger, I truly felt that he needed something when he woke, even Iif that something was just comfort. As he got older, I felt he was crying because he knew someone would come get him. It was very easy to sleep train him and he has been STTN ever since.
I am glad we didn't sleep train any sooner. I personally didn't feel he was ready until we did it. I didn't want to wait too long or else we'd be dealing with standing in the crib.
We still have not nap trained. He goes to daycare during the week, so it feels pointless. He's always been a horrible napper.
