Trying to Get Pregnant

Basal- Vaginal vs. Oral vs. Rectal?

I have been TTC for 10 months.

I've been charting my cycle and my ovulation but I want to start charting my basal temp, too.

I know that which ever one I chose I need to be consistent.

Which method do you all use/which method is better?

Vaginal, Oral or Rectal?

I appreciate the insider scoop because I feel kind of alone right now.

  • Whatever you do, don't go A to M.

  • If you choose rectal, make sure you never go ass to mouth.

  • Or ass to vag. That would be a raging infection waiting to happen.

  • There are in holes and out holes...only on a rare occasion does an out hole become an in hole.  I would never temp rectally for BBT...ever.  Most people get consistent temps vaginally or orally.  For the love of God do not put things IN the OUT hole!

    Yes Great point kelly!

  • I have definitely never heard of anyone temping rectally. Yikes.

Honestly, even temping vaginally seems like overkill to me.

You could feasibly go vag to ass. Might help it slide in better....just a thought.

  • Can't say I've heard of anyone back-door temping on here. Let me know how that works out for you.

  • In all seriousness, we're ribbing on you because we have not heard the rectal option.

Oral is fine, but a lot of women temp vaginally too.

Only with EWCM.  I find it helps the thermometer slide in and out with ease.  The good news is that is always okay to go vag to mouth!

  •  Ha ha. It's cool.

As a "newbie" I expect to be made fun of a bit  :)

The only reason I ask is because I always assumed you're supposed to temp vaginally but then the directions that came with the basal thermometer said to use it orally or rectally but it didn't mention vaginal.

    I seriously appreciate everyone's feedback :)

    You guys respond quickly!

  • I temp orally and recommend it. This cycle (my first temping) I even got a cold and had some nights of mouth breathing and still could easily see my temp shift. Good luck to you!

  • I temp orally and it's always worked for me just fine.  Any other way, and I'm not doing it!

  • I don't temp but I use the Ovacue oral monitor.  I don't know if it works... Doesn't seem to line up with the ovulation strips.

  • I temp vaginally b/c I am a mouth breather and my temps were wack until I put the therm. in my vag.

    Good Luck!

  • You could always do a cycle using the oral route.  Then, if you find that you have a clear shift, stick with it.  I switched to vaginal temping because I sleep with my mouth open and I my temps weren't consistent when I temped 2x in a row.

  • Definitely rectal Devil

FYI, you weren't charting ovulation if you weren't charting your BBT. The only way to confirm ovulation is through temping. (

Also, just curious if the therm you bought is really a basal and not just a regular digital. I know they temp babies rectally, and I never actually read the instructions on my therm, but "orally or rectally" does make me wonder if you got one that gives the right info. You want a temp that will read 96.34 and not just 96.3.

  • The thermometer that I have is the Vicks brand and it is specifically labeled for basal temperatures.

It does measure 2 decimal places :)
