If you want to soften your fabrics and eliminate static cling, just put a 1/2 cup of vinegar in the rinse cycle and use wool dryer balls. Simple and no harmful chemicals.
I do, but I always wash towels (which don't take fabric softener or dryer sheets) in the load before my diaper laundry. If I'm really planning ahead, I'll wash baby laundry, then towels, then diapers.
