I would give up the bathroom... To me, W/D is a MUST.

Also... curious, cause i know you're from Seattle, and that is where we are re-locating this summer (military, not sure if you saw it in other post), but is it possible for you to move to the burbs, or outskirts somewhere?? I was considering the Edmonds area, or even a little further up near Marysville/Lake Stevens... Couldn't you possibly pay close to the same amount, but get a little more bang for your buck up there? I also read traffic sucks big time, so maybe that plays into it... ?

We're up north in the 'burbs already.  We want to move closer to the city so our respective commutes are shorter..  Also, the bus service going home has gotten shittay, like the buses are regularly 30-45 minutes late, so we want to avoid that bus system if we can.  The Seattle bus system is much much better and if we move to the area that we want to move to, DH can bike to work and we can cut waaaaaaaay down on gas costs.

Ahhh, kay... And good to know.

I'm assuming that you're going to be stationed in Everett, so the bus sitution shouldn't affect you guys too much.

Also, if you lived south of Everett, like in Edmonds/Mukilteo, the commute would be opposite of the bad traffic, so you'd easily be able to drive without too much fuss.  :)

  • I would give up the second bathroom. We use the hall bath (LO's bathroom) for his baths only, which we could easily do in our bathroom if it were the only one.

I could not imagine bringing loads of laundry somewhere else and having to bring a toddler with me!

  • I'd go with the washer and dryer hands down. It's just me and DS but we never use the second bathroom. I often have guests (usually 2 at a time). Even then we usually end up sharing one bathroom because that's the one closest to where guests sleep and that has all my bathroom stuff in it.

A while back there was a terrible incident with a stomach bug while my parents were visiting. DS is still young enough not to need the bathroom for illness reasons. This is going to be way TMI but whoever needs to "use the bathroom" gets priority. Throwing up with only one toilet is not too bad. You can always use the trash can if you need it. It's the other end that causes problems.... and you just alternate. TMI, I know but it's doable. That is going to be very rare to happen at the exact same time but you'll be doing laundry constantly. Just think about potty training and the number of undies, clothes, and sheets you'll be washing.

  • I'd give up the second bathroom. Stomach bugs happen, what, once a year? If that? Laundry is at least once a week. Going to the laundromat with two kids in two sucks hard.

  • I would give up the 2nd bathroom.

We have a 1 and 1/2 bathroom house and it is ok for 3 people - but I can't imagine lugging laundry somewhere.

  • i'd give up the second bathroom.  we lived without a washer/dryer for 3 years, one of which was with the baby, and it was hell.

  • 2nd bathroom.  I've never had 2 bathrooms.  We have one now and it isn't an issue.  I could never in a million years not have my own washer and dryer.

  • Sorry about the predicament, CG. I would definitely choose an apartment with a washer/dryer instead of the second bathroom. Tons of laundry plus hauling 2 children to the laundry room if your husband isn't home does not sound like fun. Plus... quarters and shiit. Your lyfe will revolve around quarters. blah. No fun.  Plus its an additional expense, right?

  • I would give up the washer & dryer for sure.  After 8 years with only 1 bathroom, I will never go back.  I need 2.  Make sure there is laundry in the building or onsite and just set a strict schedule to do it every Tue & Thu night or whatever!  Then it wont get out of hand and you can keep it under control.  I dont think anyone uses quarters anymore, its all on cards now.  You just add money to your card and swipe.

I'd give up the bathroom. I fvckings HATE having to do coin laundry. And with twins?

    Fuhgeddaboutit.

Are there any apts that have 1.5 baths so you at least have an extra toilet to train the girls?

This is what I was thinking.

Either way, here are my reasons for saying give up the bathroom, insist on the W/D in unit:

    1. Stomach bugs are but once a year (if that); laundry is forever.

    2. The likelihood is that you won't ALL FOUR get the bug at once. More likely, Nattie will get it, and as you're cleaning up the vomit that splattered on the carpet next to her bed, you'll be wondering which of the 3 of you will be next, and if you can please have it last so that your DH can just take the girls somewhere so you can puke in peace. A few hours later, with any luck, your DH will puke and you'll thank the baby jesssuz that you still feel okay.

    3. When the kids get a stomach bug, they often won't make it to the bathroom, no matter how many you have. Put them in pull-ups (yes, even if they're 5) and you and your DH can carry around puke bowls/buckets.

    4. If your toothbrush goes missing, you know either Nattie or Katie took it. When it's your underwares, it could be for sale on Ebay for all you know.

  • P.S. Have you thought through how/when you'd actually do the laundry? Are you thinking of taking 6 loads at once, 1x/week, or are you thinking you'll do a load every other day? Would you be taking the girls with you to start loads/change laundry around/collect clean clothes, or waiting until you and DH are both home so one of you could camp out there and read/guard the laundry?

Thinking through that part of the process is what makes me sure I'd give up the second bathroom. But you might think it through and it doesn't sound too bad.

  • You guys are making me think too much!

    GAWD.

But this is why I asked you guys.

I think I'll give up the 2nd bathroom, if we have to.

I do laundry, for the most part, on Sundays, but sometimes it's done during the week as well.

  • You can always pee in the tub, but it's harder to wash clothes in it.

Definitely go with the unit with the W/D, though I do like the idea of the W/D hookup- it's just that it would take up so much space in the apartment.
