not drinking enough formula

I've noticed the last 4 days that my girl is not drinking the daily minimum of 24 oz. She's eating purees mostly and some finger foods though and I know that she's approaching her first birthday and intro cow's milk which will replace the formula anyway, but I'm not sure when things are supposed to happen (like the transition to all finger foods)?? What are your babies eating and how frequently? Will she need a multivitamin since the formula was the main source of her nutrients or not since her diet is mostly fruits and veggies? Guess I'm getting antsy for the 1yr Q&A with the Dr but I'd love some mommy opinions!!

Re: not drinking enough formula

  • This doesn't address all of the questions you asked (your doctor should be able to answer them), but 24 ounces isn't really the minimum once your child is established on solids.  Around one year it should be 16-24 ounces of dairy a day (which can include other sources like cheese and yogurt).

  • I wouldn't stress it. Try giving her some more solids. She may be more interested in real food at this point which is normal. Guidelines are just that. They aren't a rule.

  • DS was exclusively breastfed until 3 weeks ago when he started biting me and didn't want to nurse so we transitioned to formula. (my supply was really low)  He only drinks 12=16 oz per day but has yogurt and cheese.  He's completely on table food for the past 2 months...he's 11 months now.  He's having normal wet and dirty diapers so I am not worried.  He drinks water from a sippy too....about 4-6 oz
  • Ditto what Kerr said.

We BF so I can't help with the formula thing but I believe babies know what they need and how to compensate for example last night DS ate a lot for dinner, spinach and cheese quiche and caprese salad but I noticed today he hardly ate anything for breakfast and didn't  want much of the salmon and roasted cauliflower for dinner but he has nursed more today. I would try more solids, DS never ate pur?es but eats just whatever I cook for us so he has breakfast lunch and dinner off my plate and sometimes a snack like fruit in between meals. He's always been on a multivatim as per pedi...phew I tried to address as much as I could. HTH.

  • My DD is 10.5 months and she basically ONLY eats table foods..

  • DD has only drank about 10-12 oz. per day for the past few months, since she has been eating 3 meals of solids + snacks.

Pretty much this.  I would guess DD only has about 10-12 oz per day as well, but eats 3 meals and a snack daily.  She is gaining fine and is happy and healthy.
