Pulling at the breast

DS is 3.5 months old and I nurse him using an SNS to supplement at the breast.  Lately he has started pulling at the nipple on one side.  I think he's complaining about the flow but I can't figure out if he's complaining that it's too fast or too slow since that side is my better producer.  He tightens his lips, turns his head to the side and lets my nipple slip out.  If I hold his head so he can't do that he'll try again harder and it hurts more.

I'm at a loss as to what to do but my nipples are on fire and it's getting to the point where I don't want to nurse.

Does anyone have any ideas?

I never used an SNS. I am not sure how that works and my experience could be totally different from yours, but my DD used to do something similar (clamp down and fuss) when she just wanted to comfort nurse and there was still milk coming out. I could squeeze my nipple and milk came out, so I knew she was getting milk.

  • I would try clamping the SNS when she does it to see if she's getting too much and if she does it again, increase the flow from the SNS (just troubleshoot a little).  When DD is mad that it's not coming fast enough, she'll pull, but it sounds different than the way your LO is doing it.  When she's getting too much, she chokes.  Mess around with the SNS a little and see what helps.  I feel your pain (literally).  Baby treating your nipples like taffy HURTS!
