We had our first temper tantrum in a store

Q and I were out running errands this morning and we stopped at the party supply store just to see what kinds of things we might be able to find for favors for his birthday party. I saw a jingly toy that I decided to buy him, because he loves noisy things, and handed it to him to see if it was worth buying.

First mistake....he indeed loved it. But he was chewing on the packaging so much that I was worried he'd rip a hole in it and choke on it. SO I took it away from him...holy wailing tantrum. Normally I can distract him with something else, but he was really mad. At that point, I couldn't give it back to him, I just had a screaming baby until we could check out. I saw one of my professors from grad school walk in as we were paying, and normally would have liked to say hi, but I was too embarrassed (and distracted) by my screaming child. I thought it was too early for tantrums!! Please tell me we're not the only ones.

  • DD has started having tantrums at home now if she grabs something she shouldn't have and I take it from her. I usually try to distract her with something else but man that girl does not forget easily!

  • No. You aren't the only one. Abby throws some pretty impressive tantrums. She threw a huge one in the doctor's office the other day. Even our pedi was impressed by the magnitude of it!

Haha! I like your use of the term "impressed." Yes, DS's tantrum today was impressive. :)

Kaitlyn & RLH- Glad I'm not the only one...maybe this means they're getting their tantruming out of the way now. Wink

  • Oh we have been having them for a couple weeks now....in fact, she threw one at the library today during story time.  That was our first public one.  Boy, was that fun!

  • DD has started this, too.  Especially at the grocery store.  I didn't think I'd be thinking about ways to handle tantrums until she turned two, ha ha!

  • Oh you poor thing! We haven't had any public tantrums yet, but he has had plenty at home and I sometimes wonder what the neighbors think, lol.

  • We haven't had to deal with any public tantrums yet but definitely a few at home. Reed loves to walk (holding onto our hands) and would like to do it all.day.long. Whenever I try to redirect him and get him to sit down and play with his toys, you would think his little world was ending. So dramatic!!

I do not look forward to the public tantrum!!

  • We also haven't had a public one yet, but she indeed throws a fit at home if she is doing something I decide is unsafe // grabs something I decide she can't have and I yank her or it away.

That's what I was thinking! So much for that...I have Happiest Toddler on the Block waiting on my night stand. I thought I had more time before needing to read it, but I guess I'll be getting to it sooner rather than later.

One can only hope. I thought I had more time to prepare for this, but I guess not. My favorite part of Abby's epic tantrums though is that Lil just looks at her like, "seriously, what's your problem?" She gets the major side eye from her sister.

  • Sadly, this happened to us a couple months ago. We were on line at Kohl's and DD was playing with my keys. I took my keys away from her, and she threw a fit. I just ignored it. She stopped by the time we went to check out. I refuse to encourage/acknowledge those tantrums.

  • We had our first tantrum about 2 weeks ago in BJ's. He was snacking on puffs and ran out. I didn't have anymore and he didn't want his bottle. I didn't have anything else. He screamed 10-15 until we were checked out, and the whole 45 minute drive home. It was terrible.
