3rd Trimester

if you're having a boy/diapers/leaking just FYI - wish I knew

I read a post earlier about "just FYI" from a mom who just had a baby. She said huggies leaked and what not.

I just wanted to throw this out there, which ever diaper you use (IMO pampers swaddlers worked best for infant. Then once DS was in size 2 or 3's huggies worked the best)

ANYWAY. If you're having a boy and planning on getting him circumcised, keep in mind that you put a lot of vasiline on the penis and your doctor may even tell you to lube up the diaper so it doesn't stick. Yeah, well, when you lube up the diaper it's REALLY hard for the diaper to obsorb pee. Hence lots of leaks. You'll do better to put a TON on the penis not on the diaper. But at least keep this in mind.

Sorry if this is a stupid post, but it's something I wish I knew.

  • i saw the post about the diapers too. i really think it's personal preference. i used huggies (snuggle fit) with my son and we NEVER had leak issues. we chose to circ. and my dr. didn't have me "lube" up with vaseline. i know i put a little ointment on, but that was maybe for 2-3 days and he was good to go.

we're team green with this one and received huggies diapers as a gift so we'll give those a try. who knows, if it's a girl we might need to try another brand. one thing i will say is that i (and my son) have terribly sensitive skin, so i chose to go with name brand diapers. maybe it's just all in my head, but he never had diaper rash, although he never sat in wet/dirty diapers so maybe it was more that than the brand of diaper.

it's so weird how different everyone is. We were told to "lube" for like a week... Maybe it was a few days, but his skin reattached and doctor had to pull it back. Then we lubed till he was almost 1!

  • Thank you for the tip! We're having a boy and this is our first so we are totally in the dark about things like this. My MIL does at home daycare and she swears by huggies. So that's what we are going to start with and see how it goes. If we need to switch we will, but no one will know what's going to work until the LO is here right?

i can't imagine! i have heard of a few cases where it reattached.  before my son was born i was changing my nephew and i was trying to figure out if he was circ'ed but never said anything to SIL ( i think he was about 6 months at the time) and then after my son was born she mentioned that they had to be more careful because his was starting to grow back.

i know we were told put ointment on until it was healed, but i don't think we used it for more than a few days until it was healed.

  • Thanks for the tip, I am in the dark about boys and diapering. I guess I know how DH feels trying to make sure he does things 'right' with DD:)

Same with our DS the vaseline did make a difference, but we did pampers  because he didn't leak out and also they are softer IMO. Then when we was in sz 2-3 we switched to huggies little movers because they have the band on the back that helps catch the poop :) But I did find even now the regular huggies he pees out of..

I agree every baby is different though! a lot of it is in the fit

  • Getting ready to have my 4th boy, I consider myself a pro:)  We always use Pampers Swaddlers for Newborn, 1 and sometimes 2.  Then we switch to Target brand.  We never had a problem with leakage while the circ was healing.  You put a glob of vaseline on a little piece of gauze, stick it over the penis, then put the diaper on.  Just until it heals up, which doesn't take too terribly long.  With newborns you really want to get that diaper changed as soon as they pee in it otherwise their sensitive skin will end up with a rash.  If you do that then I don't really see how you would have too much of a problem with leakage.  As they get older you don't have to really be in such a rush to change them after every pee.  My general guideline for myself was that once the diaper started leaking at night then it was time to bump them up to the next size.  Obviously none of this is a hard, fast rule, but has served me well through 3 boys.

ok, this post wasn't really about the brand of diapers...

But THIS info is good. Our doctor told us to smear the vaseline on the diaper and no wonder it leaked... You're pretty much putting water repellant on the front of the diaper! Gauze. Gauze is where it's at! :)

  • Definitely appreciate the heads up! Another one for ladies with a DS on the way - my sister swears by the "Pee Pee TeePee" for diaper changes. She bought me a pack of them from Buy Buy Baby - which was wonderful since I had never heard of them! They are washable and she said they have saved her from being sprayed during diaper changes more times than she can count!

  • I'm pretty sure it's different for everyone. I nannied a little boy and we only used huggies with him. He leaked out of pampers like crazy.

I think this is what we'll do.  We have DD in Target and have since she was pretty itty bitty, but I do like the line on Pampers that tell you if they've peed or not.

  • Didn't matter for us. Both brands leaked. The lube redirected the flow right out of the diapers. Just something we had to deal with...

This was the point of the post.

I "thought" the diapers sucked but it's because of the lube.

  • I think it just really depends and you end up finding what works best for you. I started with Pampers sensitive swaddlers and they worked great for DS. I loved the line on the front that would tell me if he wet. I also had DS circum and I don't remember the pedi telling me to lube him up. We kept it clean and maybe used a little vaseline the first couple of days, but after that everything was great.

My biggest advice as far as little boys go is cover the pee pee when you change them as my DS loved to spring a fountain while changing. I would just put a wipe over it while I got diaper out and ready. You gotta love our little boys!

With our third boy coming, I could change the baby in the dark! In those early weeks where a fountain is likely try putting the clean diaper under the old one and quickly remove the wet diaper. Then close the new one. With a poopy diaper things are different, but even opening the diaper and then closing it can let them finish up before getting you and the carpet.

We only used Luvs and then Target brand. I don't think we ever had pee leaks, just poopy up the back a few times. Once we upped the size that stopped too. We got Huggies and Pampers as gifts but I didn't buy them otherwise. Last week I found Huggies Little Movers 108 size 3 on clearance for $13.99 and had a $3 off coupon. Score!

  • I would just add two things DH learned the hard way:

    1. If you need to use gauze around the circ, make sure its completely contained in the daiper or it will wick out.

    2. Always point it down, if its pointing striaght up it will leak out.
