I have a friend who is from England and her name is Jemma, with a J. We were thinking of using this name (with a J) if we were having a girl. I like it
People saying Jemma is a misspelling of Gemma is like saying Katherine is a misspelling of Catherine. They are both legitimate spellings. I actually know two Jemmas and only one Gemma.
Although, I will say that the two Jemmas I know are both evil little btiches while the Gemma I know is the sweetest woman ever, so for that reason alone I prefer Gemma over Jemma. But it's not really my preference here that matters, is it?

I’m a modern man, a man for the millennium. Digital and smoke free. A diversified multi-cultural, post-modern deconstruction that is anatomically and ecologically incorrect. I’ve been up linked and downloaded, I’ve been inputted and outsourced, I know the upside of downsizing, I know the downside of upgrading. I’m a high-tech low-life. A cutting edge, state-of-the-art bi-coastal multi-tasker and I can give you a gigabyte in a nanosecond! I’m new wave, but I’m old school and my inner child is outward bound. I’m a hot-wired, heat seeking, warm-hearted cool customer, voice activated and bio-degradable. I interface with my database, my database is in cyberspace, so I’m interactive, I’m hyperactive and from time to time I’m radioactive.
I actually like it better with a J. For some reason, I always want to pronounce Gemma with a hard G. I know an adult Jemma with the middle name Raine. Pretty.

Re: Gemma with a J?
If you need a J name, then look for a J name rather than ruining the spelling of name that doesn't start with J just because it has a similar sound.
It's not misspelled FTR. It's a legitimate alternate spelling that I have seen several times IRL.

Do not like it with a J
same here
Ditto.
Jemma looks ridiculous. Please don't spell it that way.
FWIW Gemma is our top pick for a girl's name.
